If anyone can offer a suggestion I would appreciate it. Every time I try to start PidginPortable I get a Visual C++ runtime error indicating "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way"
If I try to start pidgin.exe from the \App\pidgin directory it fusses about not finding intl.dll and then Pidgin.dll
Any ideas? I will be most appreciative.
Make sure you're using the version of Pidgin Portable released today (check the main page). This problem was hopefully fixed.

I appreciate the response - thanks. Unfortunately, I am using the newest version (2.1.1). The problem has actually persisted on my machine since the GAIM days. Same error - sigh - so I have never been able to run it. It runs fine on my laptop, just not on my main machine.

Only 1 minute later, hopefully you get this tonight. (Okay, so three minutes)
Check the beta testing forums, John posted a launcher to try to fix your error.
Edit: Here.
Don't know if that might fix at least running from the App\Pidgin dir, but if it still gets that runtime error, I'm not sure.

The new launcher did the trick - now I can explore Pidgin and compare it to Miranda. Thanks for your help!
