I realise that there's already 2 official media players (and a few others floating around), but I thought this one showed potential.
Kantaris is a media player based on code from VLC & Bass audio library. The interface is similar in style to MS media player 11, so it would be easy for new comers to pick up and use.
It is also an open source media player as well.
Kantaris uses the Bass audio library, a proprietary (aka closed source) commercial library that requires a license fee for commercial products. As such, it's what we refer to as freeware with partial source available. Unless the full source for an application is available, it's not open source and can't be used under an open source license (nor can it be hosted on SourceForge). Plus, it uses .NET... and .NET apps can't be portable apps.
And, to top it off, they're violating the GPL by linking VLC's GPLed code in the same app as proprietary code.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
