I'm a Newbee To Portable Apps with Name and Email Problem

I downloaded, installed, and updated Portable Apps Suite and a few others. I love the concept of this as I have two 16 gig flash drives. Here is my problems as a biginner of sorts.

Problem 1.

I am having a hard time knowing what program is what as not all of them have names that include a hint as to whether it is a browser, email program, antivirus/firewall protection, calendar, etc., except the office ones. I can understand things like Notepad, On Screen Keypad, Media Player, Key Pass, Zip, etc. But things like Miranda make me think of your Miranda Rights in war. Which don't exist anyway :)Been there done that. And all these different birds names, and things named after your favorite coffee, which by the way I like Sumatra coffee and I ride a Screaming Eagle! I am offering a suggestion here to you tech types to help those of us with aging gray matter to add a few hints as to what the program is, along with your favorite name.

Problem 2. This one is important to me. I used whatever bird program it was to try out the email program and it downloaded everything I wanted copies of left on the server and deleted them from the server when they downloaded! Grrrr. Sad I am not happy about that at all. Is there anyway to undo that???

I also noticed when creating an account you said the inforamtion would not be made public but your web page did not have the https security indicator on it and I got a warning that it could possibly be read by others publically if I proceeded. Soooooo...... I gambled and did it anyway. And can I spell out an email link like thesnoweagle (AT) Yahoo (DOT) com to avoid the spammers contacting me if anyone wanted to contact me directly?

Thanks,
"PJ"

Welcome here

Problem 2
is easy to solve.
Open Thunderbird (the email client) and go to tools-Account settings.
A new window will open.
There you click on "server settings". Then there is a checkbox on the right side which says "Leave messages on server". Click on it and a green thing appeares and make sure the 2 checkboxes below that are unchecked.
That will keep your emails on the server.

As for problem 1 take a look at the Application Page.

Server Settings Fixed. Starting Portable Apps Menu Window.

Hey Thanks Simeon for the settings info. Am I screweed though about getting all those downloaded messages back onto the server where they were originally? Or is there a sync function with the Inboxes?

I looked at the application page. It helps some. But the main menu window of Portable Apps Suite was where I thought a clue to what the program was would be a nice touch for beginners.

Another thing I noticed is you can't delete programs that were downloaded packaged with the Suite. But you can if they are downloaded individually? I know you can add things to the Suite but it would be nice to be able to delete stuff you don't want or need too.

Deleting.

You can most definiately delete any app that came in the Suite, just delete the folder "AppNamePortable" under the PortableApps directory, make sure the program wasn't running when you tried to delete it. And if it says WhatEver.exe is a program, are you sure you want to delete it?, just click yes.

Problem 1

If you look in the Beta testing forum, there is a Mod of the PortableApps Menu, the topic is something like PortableApps Menu MOD R30, it's got some cool advanced features, and you can rename the applications by right clinking->Rename App, and then call it like "Thunderbird E-Mail Client", etc. This should help you, and custom hints for individual apps I think are coming in the MOD soon. (hover->hint)

Renaming

Thanks again I will try that. I did try renaming the file folders directly. I could not get it to work the way I was doing it. I could create a new file and name it then transfer the contents to it but was unable to delete the empty folder. I will look into the other way though.

I'm pretty sure...

John said that you could rename things in the next pre-release of the menu. Also if you use Resource hacker you can change the name of the app.
