how does the PAM change the icon on a flash drive from the "Removeable Disk" icon to the "Portable Apps" icon? i am really curious.

Open up the Autorun.inf (with Notepad) located in your drives root directory
Then look for "Icon= ..." this is the path of the icon to show.

You might have noticed the hidden autorun.inf file in your PAM root folder. With this file, you can change the icon, the volume label and the default action on startup on almost any drive.
