KompoZer vs Nvu, Upgrades, Possible Suite Inclusion

At the moment, Nvu is still the main HTML editor listed in the directory. But, as most folks know, Nvu development was stopped in June of 2005 and will not be continued. Eventually, Composer2 will be released (maybe) and be based on the newer XULRunner setups in Firefox2, etc.

For now, we have KompoZer, which is a bug fix release that is progressing nicely. The latest 0.7.10 release adds in yet more handy bug fixes and minor enhancements, as well as a nice new logo. I'm packaging it now but have been a bit busy this week with multiple projects and didn't want to release it without supporting local sites in the site editor.

So, I'm thinking it's time to start pushing KompoZer over Nvu and refering to Nvu as the legacy release. Any thoughts? I'm also planning on having the KompoZer installer detect and import Nvu Portable settings (a la Pidgin from Gaim).

I'm also toying with the idea of including it in the Standard Edition of the Suite.

Good idea with the imports

Use KompoZer not Nvu. Also please return the ability of changing the GTK path of GTK apps with an INI file.

My 2 cents

Since I don't do web development, I haven't used either of these programs, but I think it makes sense to focus on the one that's being actively developed.

As far as bundling it in the standard edition suite, my preference would be exclude it. I'm sure there are more users like myself that would rarely use this program (if ever) if it was included as a standard edition app.

My 2 cents

are exactly the same.
Web development isn't that common so I would exclude it.
And I think its wise to promote the App that is better/newer/less buggy.
I also like the "import from NVU"-function but what if someone has them both installed and doesn't want to have the Nvu-settings overwrite his Kompozer-settings?
I would (if possible) ask the user before doing that or at least say clearly what it doesn't what the consequences are.

Same as Pidgin

It would work exactly the same as Pidgin does with Gaim. It would only import settings from the old app if there were none in the new app.

KompoZer > Nvu

KompoZer > Nvu

Don't include it in the new "Standard Edition" (as said above...most users won't utilize it IMO). If there ever is a "Developers Edition" or the like, then add it then.

I'm ready for a beta...bring it on! Wink

Fo a developer, its worth it, but not really to anybody else.
Besides, they can always add it on.

I wouldn't bother checking

I wouldn't bother checking the Nvu settings ala, Pidgin/Gaim. I've been using KompoZer and I suspect that most PA users have been as well. KompoZer should be the default HTML editor until something better comes along.

I've never used either, but

I've never used either, but it would be better to go with the more actively developed program.
Don't include it. Most people won't need an HTML editor. Some people prefer Notepad++. Only a few will want it and they can install it separately.

RIP NVU, hello Kompozer 0.7.10

I've just been Sandboxie-ing Kompozer 0.7.10, and I like the improvements to CaScadeS (the CSS editor) quite a bit.
While I could use Notepad to create the pages, I like the ability to tweak the CSS and watch the changes immediately.

Glazman did some nice groundwork on this in NVU, but could not really be considered user-friendly at the time.

Kudos to Kaze for making it easier to work with.

Looking forward to the official release from JTH.

I say put in the developers

I say put in the developers edition, and maybe the standard, but we dont really need it in the lite.

Go KompoZer! Put it in the

Go KompoZer! Put it in the Standard Suite too. Folks can uninstall it if they don't want it. If it were me, I wouldn't even bother keeping Nvu, but some people might rather have the original thing. Can't wait for the new release!

But what about those that

But what about those that don't get how to remove a program?

Yes, I know its easy. I put in all of my apps by hand. (Didn't have the space for a standard, and at that time I only wanted a few things.)

Well, it might be a good

Well, it might be a good idea to have a whole manual for the menu (in the help button) for those who don't get it.

I was thinking

about writing a pdf about it, but hadn't decided to. The other thing is it will be defunct if we get 1.1 beta 5 to be 1.1 period. Since I don't have that, I can't make a manual. Plus, its really hard. I figured that out doing my flash tutorial.

I volunteered...

And got some more volunteers to write a PDF, but John said people won't really read it, but if it's linked from the help in the menu, that's even better. (but then you need to have sumatra installed) Maybe have it open in sumatra, or if it's not there a web browser.

An alternate idea for PAM instruction

Putting in a help file in the traditional sense is probably overkill.

How about putting simple instructions in pop-ups that appear when you hover the mouse pointer over menu items?

For example, if you hover over the little personal picture in the upper right, a pop-up box would appear saying "Select a Personal Picture from your files".

Or, hover over "Install a new app", and get one that says "Installs a new app into a single subfolder of x:\Portable Apps\. To uninstall the app later, just delete the subfolder that contains the app."

I'd set the delay long, so that most users won't see them unless they really want to.
