WinMerge Portable 2.6.8 Pre-release 5 (Testers needed)

New release available; topic locked.

New topic since this should be the final pre-release, plus the other topic is getting a bit cluttered.

WinMerge Portable is the popular WinMerge packaged as a portable app. WinMerge is an Open Source visual text file differencing and merging tool for Win32 platforms. It is highly useful for determining what has changed between project versions, and then merging changes between versions. Plus, it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on, so you can take WinMerge wherever you go.

WinMerge Portable 2.6.8 Pre-release 5

(Previously on 24, erm, WinMerge Portable Blum )
Pre-release 2: Fixed version number, automatically changes paths (i.e. set your text editor to Notepad++ Portable and it will keep that portable), INI changes, source changes.

Pre-release 3: INI and readme changes since I forgot to do them in the last pre-release and a fix for the bug where it wouldn't launch WinMerge unless you ran WinMergePortable.exe with parameters.

Pre-release 4: Added an auto-switcher to choose between the Unicode and ANSI executables.

Pre-release 5: Added help.html; should be ready for release

Goodie. Smile

John, can we get this one out the door then? I have the page ready (still needs short URL set up) and using the default support pages. Should be fully ready for release.

What does the launcher do?

What does the launcher do? AFAIR WinMerge is portable, am I wrong?

Yes
  • Winmerge leaves a registry key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Thingamahoochie.
  • The Launcher automatically chooses the right version of the program (Unicode or ANSI)
  • The launcher makes it paf compatible.

Depending on whether or not

Depending on whether or not your system supports Unicode

To be specific, Win 2000 and up support Unicode, so it loads that (WinMergeU.exe), otherwise it loads the ANSI executable (WinMerge.exe). It works the same as WinDirStat Portable's checker.

Request: On windows 98/ME

Request:
On windows 98/ME check if there's MSLU installed.

Contact John on that, since I just use his code from WinDirStat Portable.

Nope, Won't Work

WinMerge's Unicode version, to my knowledge, doesn't work with the Microsoft Layer for Unicode. Only applications specifically compiled with MSLU will use it. And, these days, hardly any apps are (the only one I can think of is VLC).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
