I use VOBmerge to combine the vobs into one long file, load into VirtualDubMod, and then output to avi or xvid. The merge into a single file seems to keep the audio in sync better than using individual 1-gb vob files.
I think also you could use SUPER video converter, VOB2Mpeg, many more.
