It's Personal Preference

But I like Pidgin better.

Miranda starts out lame, but

Miranda starts out lame, but allows for a lot of customization, Pidgin looks nice right from the start, but there is limited customization available.

Personally, i use Pidgin

Not open source but...

I realize this is an open source forum, but I have to say I prefer Trillian over them both. Both for customization and appearance. The 3x version works fine portably and I am currently alpha testing the new 4x Astra which also seems to be working without a hitch portably.

I agree

I tried Miranda, and ended up sticking with Trillian.

I've tried all 3, and yes

I've tried all 3, and yes Trillian is probably the most refined. That said, from a portable standpoint I go with Miranda (I haven't tried Trillian portably). Pidgin is about 5 times as large installed as Miranda, and the newest version has some bugs that are annoying (like forgetting your proxy settings every time it is shut down). I also like the customizability of Miranda. The new 0.7 release is great so far, and I think it works fine with the old Miranda launcher (not 100% on if it leaves traces or not, but it functions correctly).

I use miranda & pidgin.

I use miranda & pidgin. Miranda for all proprietary messenger protocols like icq, msn. Pidgin is used for encrypted chats, because the only serious and verified encryption plugin is for pidgin (OTR).

OTR is available for Miranda

OTR is available for Miranda as well (check addons page).

Miranda

I recommend Miranda.

It's small, fast, simple, with a lots of optional plugins for several extraordinary protocolls, highly customisable.

I preffer

Miranda...

I tried pidgin when appeared and... it's bigger, does the same... asked for all my contacts on MSN again... Sad

So I stay with Miranda...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

The otr for miranda is not

The otr for miranda is not so secure. It`s a unchecked third party project by a single developer. It also don`t work well together with pidgin/otr. I don´t suggest using it yet.

The offical otr has two developers, many people monitoring it and cryptographer have also discussed and checked it.

Miranda

I started using Trillian, then I wanted to find a new one because of their commercial interest and wanted OpenSource. Specially when they dropped the (buggy) scripting support.

Then I switched to Pidgin (formaly Gaim) but didnt liked the fact that the IRC support wasnt as good as it could be.

Now I'm using Miranda. While it maybe isn't as intuitive it supports IRC to the fullest. And I now am able to script again.
