Umm i dont know much, i have a password and such but I cant get Firefox to give me the option of logging in.
there was a number so i thought id jot it down: 10.220.5.5
any help would be appreciated.
edit: also the realm says Cisco Content Engine

I wouldn't try to get around anything they have blocked. If you feel it should be allowed, talk to the Network Administrator.
I'm not asking to get around the firewall to get onto sites. im asking to log in through the firewall so i could use firefox, and my bookmarks.

What exactly are you trying to do? What were you trying to do when the error occurred?
go to
Tools>options
go to the advanced tab which is on the top
under advanced there are 4 sub categories click on network.
the first thing it should say is "Configure how Firefox connects to the internet"
click on the settings button next to that line
Then click on "Auto detect the proxy setting for this network"
close Firefox then open it again
it should prompt you for the password
if it does not you may need to manually configure the proxy

I always had "Auto detect the proxy setting for this network" for the default setting. It's the manual configuration that should help. That number 10.220.5.5 might just as well be the proxy IP, and the most commonly used port is 8080 (or just 80).
it is all right if that is your default setting because even if there is no proxy setting it will use a direct connection. I have had the same prob before and used that "Auto detect the proxy setting for this network" and it worked.

the "automatic proxy detection" didnt work

edit: tried manual. it prompted me for a password. i logged in and got this error
The request was rejected because the port it was connecting to
is not configured to receive the protocol being sent.
Please contact your network administrator.
and i am NOT contacting my network admin.

there may be a password for the actual proxy which may need a higher level account/login to access, or the port may not be actually used.
However if you want to use just your bookmarks you can go into your profile and there is a html file which has all you bookmarks.

You could get the proxy connection settings from internet explorer and use those settings in firefox. I did it that way
but do you know what people would think of me if i got firefox working on our computers? id be a hero in my clique. it'd be great.

after a while your system/network admins will just block the program, so it will not matter. However if yo can see the options from IE then use those but they are prob blocked.

Usually when they block access to something, there's usually a good reason.
You can try to trip up the proxy server (which is usually added with the firewall) by switching to a secured protocol like https... but most network administrators usually catch it quickly & block that as well.
Just suck it up, ask the network administrator for access OR complain to people higher up in the school.

I had the same problem. I found out our schools proxy by logging into safari on a MAC pc.
To access the proxy I needed to use my login on the normal school pcs (Windows). When it prompted me to login it showed the schools ip:port for the proxy.
So if your school has MAC pcs, jump on one and open up safari (if it has internet access) and it should tell you the schools ip:port for the proxy

skellington firefox usually does automatically detect and configure itself for proxies if you select it instead of direct connection.
i dont know why direct connection is the default at all.
if you are saying that this doesnt work which is highly unlikely find out how ie is configured or whichever browser the default is on the computers.
the best would be to find if theres an automatic proxy configuration script,
some .pac file usually, often proxy.pac somewhere on your organisations domain.
again thats if auto detect n configure doesnt work.
give us an update on your progress.
