I would like to have either linux on a stick or a way to run linux easily and portably on any system.

Take a look at Moka5 (web search). It is a version of VMPlayer that is run from a USB drive.

Search the forums before you post. John/Steve is/are working on a portable Linux situation using QEMU. Although it will include Damn Small Linux, it will work with any Linux distro.
