Privacy: Firefox Portable phoning home?

"netstat -a 5 >netstat.out" tells me that FF Portable is connecting to server2.rareideas.com when it starts up. According to the www.rareideas.com site, RareIdeas apparently owns PortableApps.

Is this necessary? What, exactly, is it sending back to rareideas.com? Do the other PA programs do this too?

I didn't realise that.

I didn't realise that. However I see PA and feeds in the buttons bar. I've never looked at the rss-feeds nor used the links provided in FF portable. Are these neccesary to include?

(Would save John alot of bandwidth)

Promotion

John wouldn't put them there if he didn't want to. Blum Mozilla let him put them there to promote the site and make it convenient for users to see what's been released.
