I think it's time we start to recommend that people using AVG AntiVirus uninstall that program. How many false-positives is it responsible for in these forums?
The final straw for me is this recommendation from the ReadMe file that comes with the UnrealTournament3 demo that just came out:
If AVG anti-virus software is installed, it needs to be uninstalled. This program causes resource conflicts with drivers. Be sure to restart the system after removing AVG.
'nuff said.
There's gotta be some better free AV software we can point people to. (Yes, I know, ClamWin is great.)
I have used AVG for several years now and it never has given me false positives.

It's one that I've always used. There is a free Home version, but one has to register online to receive a free Key code.

Weeee!
avast rocks and i have never had any problem with it. not to mention it is free and one of PCWorlds top 10 antivirus programs. professional eddition is listed as number 6 at $40 but home edition is free. i have never had anything that it cannot detect or remove! it even has the option to remove a virus at boot up!!

Avast! also doesn't take over your screen when it updates, just a vocal "virus database has been updated" to let you know it happened. I continually uninstall Norton and AVG on friends computers and give them Avast!
I am not my signature.
I have to agree. I used to use AVG, but now use Avast. I got tired of having to reboot my computers every time a virus definition update was installed. And I like how unobtrusive Avast has been.

I never got any false positives at all, especially for my PortableApps I've been working with and as for UnrealTournament3 Demo I ignored that warning and it still ran fine side by side with AVG

BitDefender 8.
They have a free edition which got good reviews.
Please Make TiLP Portable
I am a firm believer in AVG and highly recommend it to anyone who asks me which AV to use. I have only had one false positive in the last 6 years or so that I have run AVG and that was one time they thought the launchers were generic trojans. I e-mailed them and less than 3 hours later they apologized and released an updated def file. When updating AVG, I have never once had to reboot for it to apply the def. I have had a few machines that needed to do that but that was attributed to an old install that had been working 1.5 years and finally got unstable.
I will only use AVG on any of my home systems as it is the only VA that I have used both in the home and at work that actually works and does not bog the system down.

...a 'firm beleiver' in AVG too - that is, until AVG started...
1) ...Giving me 'attitude' when I tried to download my updates in the form of files, instead of the "auto update" feature (basically, it would refuse to update when I tried to apply the update file I downloaded - it would tell me
"...*.bin file not found in this directory"
while I was sitting there looking right AT said file in my File Manager!!!...).
If they want to eliminate the ability to manually update your install,, then at least TELL us so, and remove the "option" to do so, but DON'T give me the option and then refuse to comply!!...
2) ... Then started refusing to even update itself by the web!...
I should add that this ain't the first time these things've happened, and I'm getting mighty tired of uninstaling & reinstalling it
Conclusion:
I've had enuff of AVGs antics, and I'm switching to "Avast!"

I agree 100%. AVG has given false positives countless times in this forum alone.

Say what you will AVG is still my Favourite Antivirus system and it has never failed me yet (or even given false positives of any kind)

If it works for you, I'm not going to argue. I'm just saying in general, it doesn't work well.

For you guys it doesn't, but for me it works and never gives me false positives

Works well for me enough to trust it with every computer I touch. Plus I have had a few false positives but they were quickly (within a day or so) fixed so I have no complaints. Alot better than any other product i have used.

Or you could use ClamWinPortable

But doesn't do real time protection.
