Can't close menu - Remove drive

Tried to install Suite but installation got hung up at about 25% and would not go further. Installed Lite plus two Apps. Problem is that the close button (x) on menu has no effect. If I try to safely remove drive I get message that drive is in use and can't be closed. Not a good option if I'm using drive on borrowed machine. Do others have this problem?

Maybe..

Your download was corrupted. If You have admin rights download and install unlocker, it can close all processes.
Other suggestion : just close down Your machine and restart, delete your installed PAM on Your stick. Try a new download of PAM. Disable virus scanner, firewall before unpacking the PAM, You should make a scan just before You disable antivirus. It should work then.
EDIT: Installing on a USB stick can take some time , depending on the abilities of Your stick, so have some patience with the install procedure taking up to 15 minutes.

Can't close menu

Hi WK:

tried your suggestions. With suite lite I got to about 40% install an it hung again (Not responding). Tried base but the problem is that I can't close the menu with the "x" and therefore I can't "safely remove hardware". This was with a new download. At the moment not impressed. Think I will stick with my U3 drive.

ok my fault

i didn´t ask for Your settings. I have no experience with U3 sticks, maybe there is the problem with Your install. Give Portableapps another try. Create a new folder on Your desktop. Install the base menu into it.Open the folder and doubleclick the starter, it should work on Your PC (if it´s WindowsXP and up).Better you´d try out the 1.1ß fix , it supports multilanguage and a lot of other features including a fix for OS below XP. If that works the problem is with Your stick,if not it´s with your borrowed machine. You can copy the contents of Your new folder to a USB stick later on. Just use a USB 2.0 flash drive. I´ve got a 4GB Firestix and it works without any problems. Wink
EDIT:else, just read the U3 section https://portableapps.com/forums/support/u3apps
EDIT : especially this thread should be of interest https://portableapps.com/node/6558

X

The X not working sounds like the skin problem in version 1.0 where the resolution is weird, so the "x" shows up one place and the actual place that works when you click it is a bit lower. That's resolved in the betas. On the beta I'm using the X works (finally), but you can also right click on the tray icon to exit.

If you have downloaded the files completely to your hard drive, and are getting a "stall" during the subsequent install, that's a bit more troublesome. Might be something like permissions, an error that is not caught or reported. If the stall is during the download, that's another matter.

If you can install onto your C drive that would suggest that the USB drive is weird. If you can then drag and drop the resulting directory/folder tree onto your USB drive, you would have a functioning PA system. But that wouldn't help much to figure out why the install failed.

Can't close menu

Thanks for the hint. Where do I get the "betas". As you indicate the right click also doesn't work.

The download was fine the stall is in fact on the install. Same problem with suite and lite.

Betta Works

Just found and loaded Beta 4 base. It works ( "X" and right click on icon). Will now load apps. Thanks for the hint re beta.

the install..

usaly hangs between 25% and 32% for a while. actualy it isnt a hang, it is just installing the bigger part of the apps that come with the PAM. even the individual app installs do this. if you leave it for about a half hour you will find that it installs fine.

sounds like ...

Maybe there should be a notice on that screen saying there might be a period with no apparent activity ...

Does the light on the flash drive flash while this is happening? (I haven't done an install in a while.) Maybe there could be a note about watching the flash drive blinking?

Not criticism, just wondering. If Dennis had this problem and reported it, probably more had/have it and didn't.

So..

watch out around the world, if someone´s closing the curtains, dimming the lights.
They surely do watch their USB drive blinking during PortableApps install, don´t they? And, if the USB plug is upsidedown, they´d even have to crawl on the floor or get behind their monitors. Imagine the convincing excuses like "I´ve just shown her/him how to survey the PAM install" Wink
But for serious: good practical hint, but - as I mentioned above - good things will take their time and that´s depending on the writing velocity of the USB drive. It won´t keep people from interrupting the install, as little as do any hints like splash screens , loading sliders etc. So for slow drives it´s better doing the install on the desktop and copying the whole to the drive afterwards.

Won't install

Thanks for all the hints everyone. However, everyone seems to forget that I stated that when it "hung" windows reported that program was "not responding". If that's the case what's the point of waiting. Yes I checked for blinking light.

ok,

as You´ve read above we have already given our statements to that point. You only said it works now but not where, so the real cause for the hungup install remains unclear. USB drive or local machine, that would be the question. But since it works now you´ll have a good recompense for all the suffers . And , of course almost everyone working with drives checks the blinking, I was just kidding a little, I apologize. Wink And, may The Schwartz be with You!
