I have put the following files into the plugins folder:
* NPSWF32.dll
* flashplayer.xpt
But when I go to youtube it says I need to install shockwave player… Where can I get the proper .dll files from?

It should be:
[x:\]...\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins
NOT:
[X:\]...\FirefoxPortable\App\firefox\plugins

For flash you are absolutely correct. For shockwave, I had to put mine in app\firefox\plugins. It would not work any other way but that. Flash I copied the DLL into data\plugin and worked just fine.
I tested this by going to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome as it has a tester there for both flash and shockwave to see what version you are running and to test to ensure that it works.

It's too bad that both directories have to come into play.
It just makes things more complicated
The implication is that you would need to back up the ..app\firefox\plugins directory under FF as well as the \data directory under FFP if you wanted to back up your plugins as well as your profile

The easiest way to check which plug-ins you have for Firefox is to punch in "about:plugins" into the address bar & then look through the list to find what you have.
BTW, Shockwave is a bit of a depreciated plug-in nowadays as Flash is so versatile. Shockwave was originally used to develop applications (mostly games) online. It also included it's own plug-in system (separate from your browser) so additional support could be added to run the Shockwave file.
Shockwave was pretty popular in the late 1990's, but it fell out of favor in the early 2000's. There are a few sites that still use Shockwave, but it's mostly for old stuff.
