Forgive my ignorance, I just thought Id ask whether it was possible to setup or run virtual drives using software stored on a USB stick. I recently bought some dictionary software which I would like to take with me, but it requires the CD to run. To avoid this I made an image of the CD and now just mount it on my laptop as required. Getting it to run off a USB stick would be excellent though. Short of cracking it to avoid the CD check is there anything anyone can reccomend. Cheers
yeah. do a google search for YadaByte Dictionary. It works fine for me and theres only two files.
I would recommend using SmithTech's Portable Startup Utility. It has the option of using a drive variable.

Make a partition on the drive. Its possible, there is some opensource partioning software around, I think. Just means two drives will always popup- unless you use a truecrypt and I don't know if that will work.
Perhaps this will help:

I have to admit, I don't know very much about this subject, so take everything I suggest with a harty grain of salt.
You pose a very good question.

Folks your missing the point of his question.
He needs a virtual CD drive.
To answer your question, yes you can do it.
UltraISO will mount cd images to a virtual drive, and it works portable.
Can't say if it leaves anything behind, but it does work.
Its shareware so you would have to eventually purchase it, (I did as its a fantastic utility)
But if UltraISO can do it no doubt you can find a freeware or open source app to do it as well.

All he wants to do is use a virtual drive so he can use his dictionary. Wouldn't it be easier to use a dictionary that doesn't need a cd to run?
Doesn't the feature of mounting a virtual CD drive require admin rights?
Always on the move - love all portable apps!
It sure does. I've posted it before, and I'll probably post it again: mounting a drive requires admin rights.
Vintage!
Ok if thats the simple answer then Ill find another way around it. I thought as much anyway, it seems unlikely that youd be able to create loads of virtual drives on a computer that you didnt have admin access to. Cheers anyway, Ill have a look at some of the stuff people have posted just in case.
I do not know if it is truly portable, but it seems to work at least. Do a search for Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel. I think it was the second link when you search with Google.
I have found the solution!

you could make this portable. for me, virtual clone drive is the best. i dont know if it is open source but i know it is free! and it handles iso's, and img's as well as a few other formats.
i dont knwo if this could be made portable thogh.
