Forum Update

John,

If I see it correctly, no one has a word about the new Forum optics. They aren't that new any more (bout 2 weeks old now) but I like them. I had to get used to it but I like them.
I didn't discover the best thing until today which is the statistics section. Knowing how many registered users we have (25,511) and how many guests (900) is cool and I was impressed by those numbers.

Thanks for making this public!

U3 FTL PortableApps.com FTW

Submitted by dellartepc on April 23, 2007 - 9:52pm

LOL I had a U3 drive for sometime now. A buddy at work had a plain flash drive and seen me use my U3 and wanted one. I knew about PortableApps.com but never bothered with it since I purchased a drive with U3 on it already. So I took his drive and and installed PortableApps base and added apps. He loved it...AND SO DID I!!!

I have a portable app for Data Synchronization

Submitted by Seven Alive on April 20, 2007 - 6:16pm

I have made a really cool, easy but advanced Data Backup and Sync program. I made it with .Net 2.0 in C# and its completely portable.
Features:
One Way (Source > Destination) Sync and Backup
Bi-Directional (Source Destination) Sync
Smart Sync - Deletes files not found on source (available to One Way sync only)
Include or Exclude Subfolders
File Wildcards (only want to sync txt files in a directory? well with pipeline you can)
Directories support relative paths (portable use!)
Password Protect Backups.
Run Multiple jobs.

Flash Drive Wear - good article, other comments

Submitted by thornsoft on April 20, 2007 - 11:45am

For those of you wondering about wearing out your flash drives, particularly developers, this will be interesting:

Particularly the part where he shows the math involved in the lifespan. It looks pretty good, and seems to back up my theory that wear leveling dramatically increases the lifespan of these drives.

Disable program check on startup

Submitted by neddyfreddy on April 20, 2007 - 11:02am

When a portableapp starts up it checks to see if there is already a non-portable version of the same software running. Is there a way to disable this? I have found that if I start up the portable version, then the non-portable version there is no issue.

I understand that I can rename the .exe of the non-portable version and work around this, but this is not a suitable solution.

What about portable java?

Submitted by onthego on April 20, 2007 - 7:09am

I did read in the forum about portable java. Someone said John T. Haller has made a portable version of java. Is this the truth or is this a myth?

Java *shall* be gpl`ed at *some day*. I don`t get why them don`t just do it and why them need to announce it. However, this probably won`t happen soon.

If so... Without running in legal issues... Could you post instructions to make java portable? I guess not just me could need a portable version for java. Doesn`t matter if first just for firefox or for the hole comp.
