Upgrade protocol

Submitted by p0rtabl3 on June 2, 2009 - 10:16am

Some applications, like Firefox, will alert you when a new version is available. As a rule, is it OK to update the application in this manner or should I await a notification from portableApps.com that a new version is available? Seems like the later, as the application itself may not be written to preserve the portable configuration.

Thanks.

Portable Apps updater for dummies?

Submitted by survivorman on June 1, 2009 - 8:14pm

I tried the latest Portable Apps Updater and I'm really confused on how I should use it and how it works.

I have my portable apps in a c:\ drive called "portableapps\

Do I need to install the Portable Apps Updater in the same directory or can it be in a different directory?

And when I execute it, it asks to install Portable Apps 0.90 or something, which when I select a single application, it goes through some processes and says it's been installed. But I can't tell what exactly has been installed and what was updated.

PortableApps.com vs. native portable applications

Submitted by JLR on May 28, 2009 - 11:12pm

I am new to portable applications, and I must say, I am somewhat hooked.

My question is why would we want to choose a portableapps.com version of a software over the native version from the developer, such as notepad++ or filezilla who both offer .zip portable downloads?

If the developer offers a portable version, is there a benefit to the portableapps.com version? Wouldn't the launcher slow things down a bit?

I do not use the portableapps menu at all.

Flash Drive Deal Alert

Submitted by dpihl on May 25, 2009 - 12:33pm

In light of the fact that most forum members are interested in portability, I would like to propose an ongoing thread where people can post if they find a good deal on flash drives, pen drives, click drives, or whatever you want to call the things we all use to carry our portable apps around with us as we migrate from computer to computer.

If posting on this thread, I strongly recommend that you re-read this section of the forum guidelines (pretty standard for most fora of this nature, but a good description of proper nettiquette by John Haller is probably worth reading anyway):
