General discussions of portable apps and news.
I would like to know what is the difference between making a portable app and a launcher for it. I have seen that in the forums and i want to know what it is.
I have portable apps on my hard drive as well as on my thumb drive. I have kept the thumb drive up-to-date, but have not, actively, used it. IT is possble that it was not used for nearly four weeks. Clawin works fine, but all other apps start up ok, but then stop responding. I was able to get Thunderbird started after updating to v.2.0.0.19 with a new install. But neither Firefox3.0.5, nor OpenOffice went past the basic toolbars, and stopped responding. I had rerun Firefox with no improvement.
Any idea what's going on?
After installing PNotes I realized the need for a launcher that runs besides PAM also other applications each time I insert the USB drive. The proposed method for this is to use a batch file on the drive which is launched by Autorun.inf. In this file you type the commands you want to be run after or before PAM is launched and of course you must think of running PAM itself. This worked fine just by replacing following line in autorun.inf:
Open=PortableApps.exe
with:
Open=Autoexec.bat
and the file Autoexec.bat looks like this:
autoexec.bat
============
@echo off
I saw some discussions about the problem with disabled AutoRun which prevents the PAM to be launched automatically. There are 2 ways proposed to avoid this problem. One is the listener which needs installation and the other is a tool from Uwe Sieber (http://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html#AutoRun) that can be used to enable the AutoRun for the USB drive. So I suggest for future releases to integrate one of these tools in PAM. The Scenario will then look like this:
I am working on database about portable apps and games. Any suggestions to site?
What kind of files should stuff be? rar/zip, torrent?
WinWGet or DownThemAll! (extention for Firefox)
I was wondering some things about these 2 apps as they seem to do the same thing.
What do you use, why.
What is the main defference.
Your comments & suggestions would be helpful.
i just installed PA on my 250gb external HD. its a seagate free agent go. it uses 2 USB ports and no AC power. anyways, i did a full format before installing PA and for some reason when i use it on either of my 2 comps running Home premium 64bit it simply wont safely remove. i dont even have to run anything. say i just plug it in and dont open anything on it. if i try to close the PA program in my taskbar and then safely remove it will say its being used by something. is this common and how do i remove safely in that case.
