How to manage the portable applications effectively?

Submitted by helloworld on December 24, 2010 - 4:07am

Greetings,

Use the portable apps since 2009. and really I'm a happy user! It becomes mine habit means I always try to find the portable version for any software. So the software increase as time goes on. I have to think how to manage so many applications in a single portableapps effectively.

Maybe it's a good idea to add new ability that can set the categories and drop the each software to its own category. So that the software can be located with ease!

Is anyone agree with me? Or other ideas?

Thanks!

PAF s work with eSATA and FireWire devices?

the only thing I found here was this thread https://portableapps.com/node/4718 but did not answer it. No luck with Google either. If PAF s work, then u should change all ur pages' title ''X | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives'' to reflect that, just saying.

PS are old threads auto locked after certain time? Cuz in gave thread, I couldn't reply/post to it

Little FYI.. I started a SVNPortable project on sourceforge today. Thought it be nice if one could just download a file, unpack it and start using it without jumping through allot of hoops. I've been fiddling around with SVN on Win32 lately and have gotten ..some.. results. This fiddling has turned into a hobby project. I say hobby because I use SVN mainly for DEV without messing around with it. I'm not a expert at SVN and learning as I go like allot of people, however I'm writing steps as scripts & batch files to make SVN easier in this distribution.

I guess this post is mainly for Simeon but I just wanted to ask if you had ever looked at making the server component portable? I can't remember what the last decision was about it, but I think you were just going to leave it, since we had sort of concluded it wasn't necessary. However, I've since realized that one key reason to make the server component portable is that you need it for LAN games.

How to make a portable app's binary run from a deeper level folder?

Submitted by jur on December 13, 2010 - 8:17pm

I use Bibletime. Its executable is one level deeper than typical portable apps, located in PortableApps/Bibletime/bin.

How would I make the executable appear in the PA menu? I tried a simple windows shortcut but that didn't cut it.

Apologies of this has been discussed before; I searched everywhere but could not find a relevant topic.

I installed PortableApps on my friend's hard drive. It works well!

My friend had no applications on his XP machine, so I installed Portable OpenOffice, Gimp, and several others in a folder I named "PortableApps" in his Program Files directory on drive C. I put shortcuts to the applications on his Quick Start toolbar.
Everything works fine, but Stellarium had to be installed in its own folder on drive C because it can't handle spaces in directory names.

Advice for a better GUI of the PortableApps.com Suite and Platform

Submitted by tapsklaps on December 12, 2010 - 12:49pm

Since a longer time I use the Platform from the Website [link removed by mod JTH] instead of the PortableApps.com Platform. The reason for my personal decision is, that in the Platform of [link removed by mod JTH] I can integrate the software in several categories (Internet, Multimedia, Graphics, System, Security, Office, Utility and Extra). I my opinion is this GUI better and clearly arranged as the PortableApps.com Platform. What about with a little change of the GUI of the PortableApps.com Platform in this direction?

Best regards tapsklaps
