Portable USB WriteProtector - any good?

Submitted by night hawk on February 18, 2009 - 3:53am

I found this program called Portable USB WriteProtector and was wondering if anyone has heard of it before and if it might be worth running to help prevent my flash drive from being infected with malware, should I run it on a library or internet cafe computer etc.?

I found it at SoftPedia.com which scan all their files for viruses, but I also uploaded it to VirusTotal as well and not one AV there detected it as a virus.

Here the link at SoftPedia http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Security/Encrypting/Windo...

Running TweakUI

Submitted by brodiemac on February 17, 2009 - 9:21am

I've tried adding TweakUI to my PortableApps menu without any success. Can someone share with me the secret to getting the app to show up in the PortableApps menu? Right now I have TweakUI.exe in a directory in the PortableApps directory like all my other apps but for some reason, it will not show up even when I refresh the list. Any help is welcome. Thanks.

Bittorrent downloads for software?

Submitted by John JD Doe on February 17, 2009 - 9:05am

I'm fairly surprised this hasn't been implemented already (at least I couldn't find it on the website) and the forum search just showed up people asking about having a bittorrent client as part of the suite, so I decided to post this topic about having links to bittorrent downloads of the PortableApps software.

How good is this portable AV?

Submitted by night hawk on February 16, 2009 - 9:59pm

I found this free Anti-virus through a google search http://www.mxone.net/en/ and was wondering if anyone has ever heard of it here and uses it to protect their flash drive.

I think at least one difference from something like ClamWin portable is this runs in real time detecting changes as they occur, so you could catch a virus loading on to your flash drive right away.

So any opinions of this AV? Does it look safe to use?

Thanks.

No clean up of temporary files

Submitted by quackstar on February 16, 2009 - 2:18pm

Don't exactly know where to put this, so its going here.

Looking through the temp folder one day, i found various combination of folders like nsq2EB.tmp. Shouldn't part of the cleanup of portable programs remove the files it created in the temporary folder?

Cmon, its portable, meaning leaving NO traces on the computer. If an admin or someone else with elevated privliges looks at your temp folder, they have a nice long list of portable programs you used.
