"Package management" (i.e., APT-like) system for Portable Apps

Submitted by paladin225 on May 7, 2007 - 1:48pm

Please see this thread for information about the Application Manager Portable project. This posting is no longer relevant.

Hello all,

A friend just told me about the Portable Apps Suite, so I downloaded it and gave it a try. It's an interesting system, but I'd like to suggest the addition of a "package management" system such as Debian's APT to facilitate application installs, removals, and upgrades.

Limiting to 1 PortableApps.exe only.

Submitted by Passerby007 on May 7, 2007 - 3:43am

Hi there. Just want to enquiry something.
Is it possible to limit the number of times of Portable Apps.exe?

Example is that each time I click on the PortableAppsMenu.exe, it will jus keep on launching and launching in the system tray icon.
Thus if I accidentally click it 10times, there will be 10 tray icons there. And 10 applications of POrtableAppsMenu running in the Task Manager.

Is there a way to limit the number of the Portable APps menu to just once?

Autorun when Flash Drive Plugged in

Submitted by moark on May 6, 2007 - 2:25pm

Thanks for Portableapps. I am totally new to using apps on a usb flash drive so forgive some dumb questions. I am installing my program I wrote on a flash drive. It works great but I would like to have it load automatically when plugged in or even on the portableapp menu.

A search of Google indicates that autorun will only work on CD's and not USB Drives.

Any ideas greatly appreciated. I finally was able to remove U3, Portableapps is much better.

NEW additions to PortableAppsMenu

Submitted by catsgotmytongue on May 3, 2007 - 5:30pm

I decided to add a couple features to the PortableAppsMenu because I wanted those features and they're very easy to implement and thought I'd share it with the rest of you.

added the ability to hide files and give them display names

to add a display name:
1. make a corresponding text file with a '.displayname' extentsion
-the filename itself is the .exe name plus the extentsion .displayname
-myprogram.exe's displayname is stored in the file myprogram.displayname

e.g. if I want to give a display name to myprogram.exe I just make a text file called

Hi, everyone!

Simon Tatham has announced the release of PuTTY 6.0 on the 29th of April.
Any chance we will be seing an "official" release of PuTTY Portable 0.60?

His announcement follows (only edit is e-mail addresses scrambling):

PuTTY version 0.60 is released
------------------------------

All the pre-built binaries, and the source code, are now available
from the PuTTY website at

This is a minor patch release to 0.59; it contains only bug fixes,
and only very minor new features. New features include:

Firefox Portable Live and Helper Apps on CD

Submitted by RazorEye on May 2, 2007 - 3:32pm

I've tried to find a way to set up FirefoxPE to use Sumatra and VLC as the default apps to use from a CD. I know that it's easy enough to do when running from a USB drive as the PortableApps launcher itself is supposed to take care of this, it even says so on the website for FirefoxPE. Anyone know of a way to do this without having the PA launcher around?
