I second this request. It's a stong AV and would be a valuable addition to anyone's USB. Here are the details for the interested:

Program: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Website: Http://www.malwarebytes.org/

License: Freeware

Description: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a high performance anti-malware application that thoroughly removes even the most advanced malware and spyware. With one of the fastest, most effective quick scans and malware removal capabilities on the market, this program is the perfect addition to your PC's defenses. The full version [Not Free] of the product includes a number of key features, including the ability to schedule updates and scans and most importantly, a real-time malware protection module that blocks malicious processes before they even start.

Review: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 8 minutes even with other high-resource programs running. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning including networked drives, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep down the clutter. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept changelog and an instant definition file update.

Do note that the real-time protection is restricted to the paid version, as is the scheduler for updates and scans. Overall, though, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a responsive malware remover that does what it should with a minimum of fuss. (source: http://download.cnet.com/)

I agree with this. It was on

I agree with this.

It was on my list of software to request anyway, next to creating a launcher to run registry mechanic.

There were no links in here.

I third the request

[Please don't reference illegal sites like that, however subtle you try to be; it's pretty much the same as linking to them. Consider this a friendly warning - Mod Chris]

I fourth the request - not much antivirus stuff on this computer, and I don't feel like cluttering it with registry entries, etc. Malwarebytes would be a great addition to my sw library... Smile

I wouldn't mind giving this

I wouldn't mind giving this one a try, I use the free version myself. This would be my 1st and I would be learning how to do things as I go so it might take some time.

Once you go portable...

Great Program

I used this for the first time recently in an attempt to remove a trojan. Other anti-virus/malware programs were telling me the trojan was there but didn't seem to do much about it. MAM took care of it for me completely, so it's fast become a great backup tool in case my real-time AV solution (and other security software) fails me.

Would be a nice tool to have on my portable disk for those emergency situations.

Probably not possible...

As a user of MBAM also, I know of it's power.

But just a couple of things first (my opinions ;)):

>> I second this request. It's a stong AV and would be a valuable addition to anyone's USB. Here are the details for the interested:

It is not an AV, and should not be a replacement for a good real time scanning av, portable or not, IMO. It complements an AV, and forms something known as layered protection.

Next, Licensing issues.
-I imagine that this would inflict slightly on their 'Technicians License', as you would most likely have some people using the portable version as a technician, and (probably unknown to them) violating the license policy.

MBAM's opinion:

The subject has been suggested at the MBAM forums and seems a good idea, however it has been suggested that the usefulness of it seems limited.

Unfortunately because of the way MBAM is designed to work, the developers have stated that a portable version or offline bootable version are not in their plans at all, however, as far as central management goes, there are ways to accomplish this with a corporate license, and there are further developments on the horizon, although I'm not privy to the details. If you want more info on it please contact corporate [at] malwarebytes.org smile.gif .

(bold is mine)

That said, some of their other products are somewhat portable:

MBAM also requires admin rights to run, and (I think I have read somewhere) there are also drivers issues in terms of access...

That's a real pity

Hopefully in future development they'll start moving towards something that could be portable. I guess we're back to Spybot. Again they have previously given permission for PortableApps.com to make a portable version of their so just a matter of someone picking it up.

Also MBAM is still an AV. Just the free version doesn't provide real time protection. Therefore I currently use it as a secondary scanner with Spybot and ClamWin as other secondary scanners and Avast as the primary (real-time) scanner.

Thanks for the info though.

We don't have it....they gave

We don't have it....they gave permission long before the freeware posts were being made, u know, like 2 yrs ago, when it was "coming soon".

There are tutorials on how to kinda make it portable, but I think its time to hop into some nice chats with them, and get them to do it, as they know all the inner workings of the app

more than just AV

MBAM is more than just an Anti-virus program, it deletes malicious programs that other AV's can't

like the Malicious fake Anti-virus programs that no matter what you do or haw many times you delete it, it comes right back

MBAM is the only program i've found that can get rid of those, that's actually how i originaly came across it

I agree but it wont happen

I have checked on the Malwarebytes fourms, They wont allow a official portable version of malwarebytes as the maker of malwarebytes says 'I would rather not this PORTABLE version be publicisied. It goes against EVERYTHING I had planned for this project. If you want to use it for yourself, go ahead, but please, do not spread the word about it.' but yet he goes on to say on his next post 'Until we make an OFFICIAL portable version, I would rather we keep the 3rd party ones under wraps. I appreciate your attempt, and it worked pretty well, but I just can not support it officially.' so as for their being a real Malwarebytes portable app could be yes, but you could get in trouble if you spread it. Also alot people thing this is anti-virus it is and it is not. This is only for Malware so if you only have malwarebytes as your only protection for viruses and you run Vista or Seven it will say you have no anti-virus protection. So please people don't just use this as your only protection...

Hmm...

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't viruses a form of malware? It was my understanding that malware was an umbrella term which referred to all mailicious software. That would include viruses, trojans, worm, adware, etc.

Yes...

You are technically correct, but MBAM is designed to work WITH an AV, not replace it. As described here:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=30257

And obviously, which av you choose is up to you...

Short Answer: No

Basically as the app stands now no it won't be done. The author may in the future change the way the application works to make it more compatible with a portable application framework.

I personally would love this to be portable as I use it on all my pc's and install it for friends and would love to demonstrate it to others.

If you would also like this just send the Malwarebytes guy a line saying - In a more civil tone - and they may decide to work on it.

It's possible

I tried to use VMware Thinapp. I't works but sometimes will crash due to the problem ''BEX''. That error is triggered by MICROSOFT DEP. I think ''thinstalled malwarebytes'' will execute some data in the memory. So it will be closed sometimes in the quick scan due to the execution of data in memory.

I'm Close

I'm close to making a semi-portable mbam.

What I have done is:
Installed mabam on a computer
Copied the install directory to my flash disc
Copied 2 sys files (mbam.sys & mbamswissarmy.sys) from %windir%\system32\drivers

On my flash disc I have written a batch file:
COPY "mbam.sys" "%windir%\system32\drivers\mbam.sys"
COPY "mbamswissarmy.sys" "%windir%\system32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys"
regsvr32.exe "vbalsgrid6.ocx" /s
regsvr32.exe "ssubtmr6.dll" /s
regsvr32.exe "mbamext.dll" /s

That copies the 2 sys file to their right place, and registers the dll's and ocx file.

The problem I am having now is an error that comes up that I don't know how to fix - MBAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE (0, 5)
I assume it is having problems with the virus db, so far all I can find in google is to uninstall, and re-install..... doesn't really help in this situation....

What else I know about mbam is the following directories:
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Quarantine\Necessary files (definitions) are created upon update:

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ignore.dat

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\news.txt
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\

and the following registry entry:
HKCU\Software\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

any help would be appreciated Smile

Detailed Instructions:

Detailed Instructions: http://ourproject.org/moin/projects/batchsandbox/Malwarebyte's_Anti-Malware
Writings of what batch commands worked and which didn't: http://ourproject.org/forum/forum.php?thread_id=7485&forum_id=1998

For ease of reference, the batch file is

---
IF NOT EXIST %windir%\system32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys COPY "%cd%\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys" "%windir%\system32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys"

set WINDIR=%cd%\WINDOWS
set USERPROFILE=%cd%
set allusersprofile=%cd%
set Temp=%cd%\Local Settings\Temp
set tmp=%Temp%

set path=%cd%\WINDOWS;%cd%\WINDOWS\system32

start /MIN mbam.exe
---

I never got "MBAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE (0, 5)". When I was playing around the with ALLUSERSPROFILE (I forgot the plural S in USERS), it said something similar to database not found, and asked if I want to make a new one.

I've only tested this up to the point the program runs. I haven't tried scanning. This batch file is made for WinXP, as I don't use Vista or 7.

Let me know if it works or not for you.

Sorry for the late reply.

Sorry for the late reply. Been very sick last few weeks Sad

I ran the batch file (I'm on W7x64) it looks like it works, except mbam comes up with some different errors. I'm pretty sure it is W7x64 related. I'll take it all to work and run it there, they're using XPx86 machines and let you know how that goes.
Thanks for your help Smile

Malwarebytes Portable

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say that i created a portable malwarebytes that works perfectly. I've been using it on various computers over the last year or so but just lazy to go through the process of uploading and doing the whole thing. If anyone wants to test it out and upload it email me and ill send you a link to download. At first i tried to thinapp malwarebytes but the problem is that for it check and add the latest definitions to your computer, specific registry entries must be executed however i found a workaround. Anyways if anyone wants to try it out send me an email: amazinz2006@yahoo.com

Malwarebytes Portable

And to MBAM if your listening:

The reason it's IMPORTANT to have it in portable form is that sometimes if a computer is infected beyond recognition usually (1) The infected computer cannot connect to the internet and thus cannot retrieve any new definitions and (2) many a time certain viruses prevent it's installation altogether. However with the portable app I created the definitions are stored in the same folder as the executable which therefore allows me to update the program from a 'clean' computer from my flash drive and then run it on an infected computer from my flash drive with the latest definitions.

Why would permission be required to use it without modifications?
an auto-install should not require permissions.

It's the name. You can't change how the application works and legally release it under that same name. Same reason why I can't advertise counterfeit goods as the original.

Portable App - Malwarebytes

You don't have to wait on Malwarebytes or PortableApps to get the job done. cameyo.com will allow you to record the initial installation of ANY software program, then, when you stop the recording, it will make the package for you which can then be placed on a flash drive.

There will not be an official

There will not be an official version here in the immediate future because the developers have already been asked about that, and they have refused.

Suggesting ways around lack of permission by a developer is not something we should be doing here.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.
