Several folks have expressed interest in the GIMP Help files being made available for GIMP Portable over the years. We've come up with a way to package it that should allow us to keep it updated without too much extra work. The help files are for all releases in the 2.8.x line and will be preserved as you upgrade GIMP Portable.

First off THANKS John however was a minor issue on the American English installer Win 8 64 bit installing shows this Error Screen If I click retry it just goes back However If I choose ignore it proceeds to install it. When I launched GIMP and went to Help it loaded the help files

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss

I can't reproduce this issue. The only time I've seen it occur is a permissions issue or a corruption issue.

I had downloaded it three separate times and had gotten same results each time before I posted it.....feel free to remove my comments if you like

After running the installer and pointing it to the GIMPPortable folder it proceeds to install.
However upon launching the GIMP it cannot locate the help files, and prompts me to either change the preferences or to use the online version.

Edit:
It seems that despite setting the language to en_GB as per the LANG parameter it launches as en_US and ignoring that choice.

Therefore after installing the en_US locale of the help files it will work, but not if I install the en_GB version where it will simply fail to see that it is present.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.

I must try with the en_US pack.

Like you after changing the language parameter to en_GB in GIMPPortableSettings.ini I still only see system language and en_US in the interface settings of GIMP portable.

Oh, well here goes with the portable gimp help en_US language version.

Cheers,

Hugh

As a side note, remember that if you are using the PA.c Platform, that setting is ignored and it will use whatever the platform is set to. Also ensure that you have the additional languages installed within GIMP. If you installed it as English (not EnglishGB) in the installer without the extra languages installed, it will not launch as en_GB (since it won't exist) but default back to en_US.

Ok that seems to work now, though that introduces another issue elsewhere.

Upon changing the launcher language to EnglishGB the text for the "Apps" button is replaced with "Manage Apps", or at least I presume it is.
Because the text is actually longer than the width and so gets cut off or truncated part way into the 2nd P.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.

Open up the file EnglishGB.locale within the PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\locale folder. Find Manage Apps to the right of the = and ditch the Manage part. I forgot to update it in the 11.2 and 12.0 beta releases.

Thanks for the information, John and ByteMy...

Also would that be remove Manage from the
entry ICON_MANAGE_APPS=Manage &Apps?

Do we leave the ampersand untouched? I expect it is vitally important in programming terms.

Thanks again,
Hugh

Yes, leave the ampersand. It's for Quick keys - Alt+A opens that particular function.
