Extracting setup files: effect on PC performance?

Hi there

The main reason I use portable apps is to keep my computer running as fast as possible. So far for the majority of software I use I've managed to find a portable version or at least a suitable portable alternative. But I also use many programs that aren't portable, and I thought that I would have to install all those to my computer. After some googling I discovered UniExtract, and I'm quite relieved that it works most of the time.

I'm also aware that using this method doesn't prevent registry entries being made, settings being stored to various locations on the computer, etc. I don't really care about the settings aspect, but what I do worry about is whether the mess in the registry will eventually slow the computer down. Can/will this happen? Speed/performance is my main concern, as the majority of my work is media-related (imaging programs, video-editing, 3D, etc).

Side-note: does running programs such as CCleaner help in this regard?

Registry Cleaners

1. Registry Cleaners - See: http://www.howtogeek.com/171633/why-using-a-registry-cleaner-wont-speed-...

2. Simply extracting program installation files and running them on a PC without knowing what they are doing or whether some critical step in the installation process has been missed is not likely to improve PC performance. It is far more likely to lead to system failure!

3. The type of software you are apparently running; and installing any software you rarely/never use, will have a far more impact on the performance of your PC than anything else.

Basically No Effect

Extracting the files from an app and then running them on a PC will generally have no effect on the speed of the apps you're using. As a general rule, most installers only serve to place the files in the appropriate directories (requesting admin rights for Program Files), make entries in the installed software list within Control Panel, ensure that any needed runtimes like .NET/VC runtime are installed on the PC, and maybe setup your default settings. None of these will have any effects on a program when it's running.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

In addition to previous replies

I think what you might most usefully do is check for programs and services that are running that are hogging your CPU or Mem.

There are a number of useful tools available to do this presuming you know what you are doing which is beyond the scope of this forum.
