Firefox logoPortableApps.com is proud to announce the release of Mozilla Firefox®, Portable Edition 3.5.8 (Legacy Edition) in 15 languages. It's the current Mozilla Firefox browser from the older 3.5 release bundled with a PortableApps.com launcher as a portable app, so you can take your browser, bookmarks, settings and extensions on the go. It's intended for web page testers and the small percentage of users who have not yet updated to 3.6, though users are encouraged to upgrade to the current Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 3.6 release for better portable performance. This new release updates Firefox to 3.5.8. We've expanded the languages available to include Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), Russian and Spanish (Spain and International). It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And, as always, it's open source and completely free.

Auto-Update Issue

If you allow Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to auto-update, some non-personal files may remain on the local PC. This will be addressed in a later release.

Thank you John,

I'm not ready to move to the 3.5.x series yet, but I, and I'm sure others, appreciate that you have made this available for when we do.

Hmm somehow I have Firefox 3.6 according to the about box. (must have been auto updated I guess) so I skip this one. (Confusing having different versions around. BTW, is Firefox 3.0.x still supported for Windows 2000 support?

Thanks for this release Smile

Tim Clark's picture

I can't speak for John of course but I believe he is still supporting 3.0.x because Mozilla is.

Actually, 3.0.x is now end of lifed - this was the final release, no more security fixes, etc - and everyone should move off of it ASAP. 3.5.x will be supported for a short while, but everyone is encouraged to move to 3.6 as all new dev work goes into its launcher.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Please help, if that is possible. My user name is
JUST and I am trying to log, but impossible. I ask for
help , but I never get any email for that. Please help
to get my user name back. its due emotional reasons and
I do not wish to lose it. My email is the same, as its
on this user name.

Hope to have your attention.

Just.

John, thank you for releasing these updates. But the auto-update confusion remains. Could you have a look at the topic I posted in the Firefox support forum two days ago: https://portableapps.com/node/22691 ?

I think it would be of benefit to many users if this issue could be cleared up.
Thanks in advance.

What you're talking about has been addressed dozens of times in dozens of threads and is mentioned in every release note. There is nothing new to discuss or clear up. It's 'fixed' in 3.6 but may still leave non-personal files behind, so updating by installing a new version from us in place is still recommended.

John, thanks for the reply, but I'm a bit disappointed you're being so dismissive.

What's New ?

What was objectively different than before, is that usually PA.c releases an update 1 or 2 days after Mozilla. Now it has taken 7 days (no reproach, just a statement of fact). I was getting a bit annoyed with Firefox continuing to ask me to upgrade ASAP, that's why I started re-considering whether it was OK to let Firefox update itself.

What you're talking about has been addressed dozens of times in dozens of threads and is mentioned in every release note. There is nothing new to discuss or clear up.

So every user has to follow every thread in the support forum ? I thought PA.c wants to go mainstream and attract Joe PC user. I follow every announcement on the main page religiously and I've never read any news on the update bug. With the benefit of hindsight, I see that there is apparantly a difference between how updates were announced up until 3.0.6, where the news story (https://portableapps.com/news/2009-02-04_-_firefox_portable_3.0.6) reads:

Reminder: Don't Auto-Update

We also wanted to remind everyone not to use the built in auto-updater with Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition due to an unfixed bug in the updater itself. As with all software in PortableApps.com Format, you can do an in-place upgrade (install the new version right over the old one) and all your data will be preserved. More here: Upgrading Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition and Bug 406335.

and how they are announced from 3.0.7 (https://portableapps.com/news/2009-03-05_-_firefox_portable_3.0.7) onwards:

Auto-Update Issue

If you allow Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to auto-update, some non-personal files will remain on the local PC. This will be addressed in a later release.

I'm sorry, but I'm not among those mind-readers that could have deduced the actual meaning of that change in description, which seems to be:
"The update bug present in older versions (see links) causing interference with the registry has been fixed in version 3.0.7. However, be advised that using auto-update may still leave some non-personal files to remain on the local PC." I don't know if there is fixed location where those files can be found (like a temp folder or such); if there is, that would be an interesting piece of information to share.

The fact that this issue has been addressed "dozens of times" is at best an indication that many users are confused by this. All the replies differ in the first version that had it fixed (you write 3.6, but given what I found above, 3.0.7 seems a better guess). More importantly, the fact remains that the 3 support resources (as quoted in my forum topic https://portableapps.com/node/22691) do not reflect the same information. I *just* noticed that this pinned forum thread (https://portableapps.com/node/10338) all of a sudden has received the "[Outdated]" prefix. Now there's a bit of a coincidence ...

I have no intention whatsoever of being unpleasant about this, but I don't like being dismissed just for constructively pointing out some obvious inconsistencies.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Here are the full details...

The 3.0.x line is the last that had the issue. That line is, as of right now, dead and unsupported, so no one should be using it as their main browser anymore. The 3.0.x announcement was missing the warning, I've fixed that now.

That bug report you pointed to was from over 2 years ago and is outdated, so I added the Outdated tag to the front and unpinned it. It hasn't been valid since the 3.5 release in June of last year, it was just missed in the forum listing.

The 3.5 and 3.6 lines don't have the same issue but may leave some non-personal files behind... generally just blank directories, and usually not if Firefox is installed locally. These vary based on the release being upgraded, the OS being upgraded on and several other factors. If you care about that, don't let it auto-upgrade. If you don't, feel free. Or do it on your home PC (as mentioned, if it's done on a PC with Firefox already on it, it doesn't leave anything behind).

The 3.5.8 release was delayed because I was indisposed for several days due to a family member's funeral and having to put my kitten to sleep. The 3.5.x line is now considered "Legacy" and will occasionally not be updated in the 24hr window we update Firefox release in if other things take precedence. All users are recommended to switch to 3.6 as soon as possible as there is not much reason to stay on 3.5.x (and any nearly any extensions compatible with 3.5 are compatible with 3.6 without changes).

If you wish to discuss further, please create a forum post so we can avoid moving this news announcement further off-topic. Thanks.

First of all, thanks for the reply. There are indeed a few items that I think merit further discussion. I see no reason to create a brand new forum post, I suggest we use the one I opened two days ago: https://portableapps.com/node/22691

There's one point I'll address here because I don't want to drag it unnecessarily into the forum: I never meant to criticize you on the late release of 3.5.8. I just gave an honest answer to the question what was *new* for me. As far as I'm concerned, you don't need to justify yourself for how you use your time. As a follower on Twitter, I did know about your kitten. I offer my sympathies on both sad occasions.
I'm a strong believer in vivid discussion on subject matter while staying respectful at the personal level, on the internet or elsewhere. Just to be very clear on that.
