logoMcAfee Stinger Portable 10.2.0.910 has been released. McAfee Stinger removes 6,000 common viruses and 'fake alert' malware on-demand. It is not a replacement for a full antivirus, but handy in many situations. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. McAfee Stinger is freeware for business and personal use.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

Screenshot McAfee Stinger detects and removes prevalent Fake Alert malware and threats identified in the "List Viruses" section of the Stinger application. While not a replacement for full fledged antivirus software, Stinger is updated multiple times a week to include detection for newer Fake Alert variants and prevalent viruses.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

McAfee Stinger Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Platform including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Uh-oh, my personal enemy is unleashed. Wink

I did not check since about a year - and I am not going to again - but the last time I used this, I had to start a system wide reconstruction of deleted "threat" files. All of them were false positives and deleted without question. Maybe McAfee has changed the way it works but if not, I would use this extremely carefully. Blum

According to the McAfee Stinger web page, the action to fix or report on detection is configurable in the preferences. Is always better to check on the defaults before executing something new.

Probably really not appropriate to add my knock against McAfee, but maybe someone might be spared grief by being cautious with this app.

Thanks for the heads-up.

John, not sure what's causing it, but I seem to be getting a reget error every time i try to DL this through the platform.

MD5's match, and it downloads and installs without issue via browser, so it's not an issue for me per se, but maybe for others.

my setup:

Win7x64, Home Wifi network, no proxies, MSSE in the background, successful download via Chrome Portable. SF mirror: iWeb

If there's anything else you might need that could help, let me know.

A new version was posted today. Ours is already built and will be posted in about 15 minutes after it hits all our download mirrors.

If I can remember correctly from my old version of this, McAfee releases an update every month or something (I forget, but it's a short time) and the file release name doesn't change but the MD5 sum check will spit out that error at every update until the portable package is updated.

Also, did you ever find out more info on the licensing? I'm still curious about that.

Even today (13 December) I'm still getting the "The downloaded copy of McAfee Stinger Portable... is not valid and can not be installed."

I have not had a problem with downloading any other apps from the site.

Please advise?

I have received the same error message heretofore. I just successfully downloaded and installed the application. Perhaps my location will help with any diagnostic work that may head your way. I am currently in Hightstown, NJ.

EDIT: Just experienced the same error updating Stinger.

"The downloaded copy of McAfee Stinger Portable (http://downloadcenter.mcafee.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger/stinger.exe) is not valid and can not be installed. This could be due to an incomplete download or other network issue. Please try running the updater again when complete."

I updated the VLC player successfully while trying to update this application.

As mentioned, when there is a new release, the current installer will fail until it is updated, meaning there is a window of a couple hours where it won't install. This does not need to be reported again. We are automatically notified of new releases.
