PortableApps.com is proud to announce the PortableApps.com Platform 12.2 release. This release improves several translations, fixes several bug issues, improves accessibility, decreases interruptions in the updater/app store, and more. As always it has a complete app store, automatic updater, easy app organization, fast app searching, proxy support, a great set of themes, portable fonts, and lots of other features to make it your favorite set of apps whether you're running from a portable drive, a cloud drive, or run locally! If you'd like to see more features and functionality keep coming, please read a personal appeal from PortableApps.com founder John T. Haller to help! You can also buy the platform and a suite of apps on the hardware-encrypted PortableApps.com Carbide which is on a great sale until Monday. Read on for all the details...(permalink)

Existing Platform users can automatically update by clicking Help - Check for Updates.

New in 12.2

This version adds support for the context menu keyboard key for improved accessibility, moves errors during app updates and installs to the end of the process to save you time, updates several translations, and fixes some bugs. It includes the updates from 12.1 as well including the new What's New window on upgrades, language switching and focus fixes, and more. The complete set of changes is available in the PortableApps.com Platform Changelog.

Platform Features

As always, the PortableApps.com Platform is packed with great features like:

  • Automatic App Closing - Closing down and getting going is easier than ever with the platform automatically (and safely) closing your running portable apps and letting you know which ones need to be closed before you eject and finish syncing your cloud drive. Luthfi Harahap was kind enough to re-license some of his code to help with this feature
  • Awesome Themes - The modern default theme matches well with Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 and all your favorite classic themes are included as well.
  • Cascading Tray App Menu - Get quick access to all your apps with a right click in the system tray
  • Always-Ready Search - The app search box is always visible and ready by default, so you can open the platform - possibly with the CTRL-ALT-SPACE hotkey - and just start typing to launch your favorite app. You can even search in app descriptions if you'd like by ticking a box in Options
  • Proxy Support - The connections tab in Options lets you automatically or manually configure the platform to work with your internet proxy
  • Full Featured Installer - The Platform installer can detect and install to your portable devices, synced cloud directories, local machine, and more
  • Fast Updater / App Store - Quickly check for updates to your existing apps and find new ones by name, category, release date, and more
  • Eject or Power Off - For local users, the eject button automatically switches to a shutdown/restart/log off button, bringing up the Windows prompt to select your choice. You can also right-click on the button to select to show either eject or shutdown/restart/log off.
  • Portable Fonts - Take all your fonts with you and use them in all your portable apps
  • Organize Your Apps Your Way - Use the default of favorites and most used apps with all apps by category on the second page or switch it up by selecting alphabetical apps, categories and favorites by default, and other options
  • All the fixes and features are details in the PortableApps.com Platform Changelog

13.0 On Deck, Translators Needed

The next platform release is already partially finished and we'll be releasing a beta in the near future. We'll be going over the list of requested features and bugs to prioritize the additions and fixes in the next couple releases including things like JAVA/.NET apps, automation and batch file handling, custom themes, custom app icons, and how to handle Windows 8 and 10 breaking portable file associations. We'll be needing more translators watching the beta channel and translating the few new features in this release.

Earlier, the latest stable wasn't being pushed to users with 'Get Beta releases' selected. It should be going out properly now. Thanks to vf2nsr for reporting.

I kind of wondered about that when I did a quick update check earlier today, but figured it hadn't been rolled out fully yet.

Thanks John, and vf2nsr for reporting it!

Hey John and team,

Congrats on shipping 12.1 and 12.2. I'm glad to see this project continue, especially with USB 3.0 and lucrative USB 3.0 flash drive sales, it's a great time for portable apps.

If I could make one request... With the PortableApps Updater, given three apps A, B, and C, it will download them all first, and then install them all. What if, during downloading of B, A could be installed? The Ninite installer does this and I think it helps speed things along. Just a thought.

Either way, keep up the good work.

John,

I'm getting a "Download Error: File Open Error" when trying to update the platform from 12.1 to 12.2 via the updater. It looks like it's trying to dl the correct file but is requesting it from the /portableapps/ root directory, not the /PortableApps.com Platform/ subdirectory. Would you please take a look at that?

Thanks!

Upgrading from 12.1 to 12.2 works without issue on Windows XP through 10 in my testing and the upgrade process has been unchanged for about 4 years now, so it's something specific to your setup we'll need to nail down. Please post a note in the forums with your complete details including full install path, OS, 32/64-bit, anything else running, etc.

Will 13.0 have the option of allowing for alternate installation directories; allowing the update function to work when a portable app is in a directory the user installed the app in other than the default/expected directory?

Thank you for all the great work on a great set of programs. I use a portable app every chance I get.
