Process Explorer Portable 16.20 has been released. Process Explorer is a task manager and process analyzer that can drill down into handles and DLLs that processes have loaded. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. Process Explorer is freeware for business and personal use.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

Screenshot The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded. The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

I get a error message when I try to update or install this. I get a error message "the download copy of process explorer is not valid". I don't understand why the file can't be a offline installer.

Whenever a new version is released, we have to update our installer to match. It's in progress now.

An offline package would be illegal. The license for these apps prohibits even unaltered redistribution, so repackaging would be 100% illegal.

Thanks. I didn't know it illegal to alter freeware. I understand now why some programs are online installer.

No problem. It's a bit of an odd app. It was updated without the version number changing (which is frowned upon and bad practice security verification wise) so we didn't expect it to be updated. We have our installer specifically keyed to an individual release of an app with a hash of it and we scan each publisher's release with more than one antivirus engine to ensure it's clean first. That way, if the publisher is hacked later, our installer won't just blindly let a user download and run it. You'll get the error that you saw. uTorrent's main site was hacked a few years back, so anyone blindly downloading utorrent.exe from them got malware. Our uTorrent Portable is an online installer (at the publisher's request) but we host the downloadable utorrent.exe ourselves since they allow that. That means that (1) the installer doesn't break on each new version since it's linking to a specific one we host and (2) our users are protected from uTorrent being altered after the fact on our end or midway since the hash is embedded in the online installer download. We'd take this approach with these Microsoft apps if they allowed redistribution but sadly they do not. We may implement a caching server in between that could alleviate this issue at some point, though.
