Found an issue. The app
Found an issue. The app itself is awesome, but when closing the portable version, the processes for X-Chat don't fully close. I tried to move the folder and it wouldn't let me because a bunch of files were locked by X-chat

Hmm...interesting...
I'll look into that.

Thank you for testing, and for the kind words.

can i just use miranda
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
yo can use whatever you
yo can use whatever you want.....X-chat is made available as an OPTION not a requirement.

Haha, nice Zach
No, powerjuce, Pidgin and Miranda are not allowed, X-Chat only. :P Just kidding, but if you find yourself connecting to a lot of IRC channels or using IRC a lot, X-Chat is made for IRC and IRC only, so it's much more what you'd be looking for.

Systray Icon?
When you enable the systray icon and then click it, the program terminates.
I'd like to see a version where you can minimize the entire program to the systray, I used to run a non portable version where this was done.
Otherwise, nice work!
Wow
I agree. I had never left clicked on the tray icon until now. That's odd. I'll let the developer know.

Question
Will the portable version of X-Chat ever expire like the official build?
By the way, this is a spectacular build. I see no problems whatsoever.
No
This uses X-Chat's main code, and Silverex (Silverex.org) build upon it with some extra features. I love it too, the only problem is clicking the system tray icon (left click) crashes the program, oddly.

left click crash
Hi guys,
I just wanted to confirm the crash with the left click .....
Cheers,
Ralph
Thanks
Thank you very much for that.

try a different tray plugin
yah i don't know why this happens, but it's not just this portable one - silverex's normal build does it too. What I did was unload (and delete) the tray plugin it comes with, and install this: http://www.sinisterdevelopments.com/X-Tray/
Maybe you could package that with it by default.
Ditch Tray?
Actually, we could ditch the tray plugin altogether and link to this one as an option if people want it.

That sounds like a good
That sounds like a good option. Patrick should give this package a quick once-over, update anything needed, and this should go to a Pre-Release. I have a feeling this one will be pretty popular.

Yea
We talked about is last night. silverex doesn't seem to be updating his build any longer, so I tried contacting him again.

Packaged
I had packaged it in an earlier release. Yea, we could do what John said.

Also...
Occasionally, when you open a file dialog, the program crashes. I noticed this frequently with the Sound file dialog.
I am running it
seams to be quite stable on my machine has crashed once in about 20 hours of use, altho windows that open above the main chat window move up the screen when someone types, doesn't seam to update the window location.
All in all a great app tho.
Paul
ditto
I had the same problem with the tray icon. I correctly assumed that this was the base app and not the launcher, but I'm gonna use the alternative systray thingy posted earlier. Other than that, this is great. When do you think an offical release will be available?

Unknown
The main project is violating the GPL (and thus copyright) of contributing devs by only releasing it compiled with a shareware component that expires it after 30 days. So, we need to rely on an alternate build by SilvereX. But it looks like he stopped maintaining it in December and it's now 6 point releases behind. Unless we have a reliable source for ongoing updates of the app itself, we won't be supporting X-Chat going forward.

Updated
X-Chat Portable has been updated to development test 2. See the main post for details.

Link
The Download link doesn't work.
Fixed
Thanks, it's been fixed. I could have sword it was working last night. :P

I get the following error on network connect
When I connect to a network I get a dialog with the following text and an OK button:
Warning: "" character set is unknown. No conversion will be applied for network MindForge.
Everything else seems to be working fine.
****EDIT****
I fixed it. I just edited the channel and selected System-Default for the Character set and the error is gone. Not sure if that's a PA/Compression or an App bug...
Update Coming
I had a user come into #portableapps asking about an update to X-Chat last night, so I thought I'd give emailing Silverex another try. Finally, I got past his spam firewall this time. He got back with in an hour and this is his response:
Yeah, I'll update soon. I'm now finishing my paper, I'll be free starting sometime next week. so hopefully then :)
So, look forward to that. :)

Nice!
Nice. Let him know we'd like to work with him and do the releases together, link back and forth and see if there's any way we can help him out.

Patrick, do you know if we
Patrick, do you know if we can install ActivePerl, portably so we can use perl scripts in X-Chat Portable?
Dunno
That I'm not sure on. I'll try to look into it.

Making it portable yourself...
So, I purchased mIRC a few months back which works fine on my USB drive, but I left the drive at home this morning and needed to d/l something to install on my work machine temporarily. I found xchat and fell in love with it. I want to purchase a license for this one, now (still in the 30 day trial, right now), but only if I can make it portable. I realize he's violating the GTK and all that, but the "free" builds are not reliably maintained... is there a tutorial somewhere on making an app portable yourself? I really love this client. I could do it via batch file, but I don't like the cmd window being open while I'm running the client. I could make a shortcut for it, but shortcut paths rely on hard drive letters, which also sort of removes the portability. Any ideas or is this just not a good question to ask?
Slightly Confused
As I noted below, Vaidrius Petrauskas at http://silverex.org plans on updating his build within a couple of weeks. He was and hopefully will continue to keep the most constant with releases. I'd say wait and see with that situation, because there's no reason to blow 20 bucks on official XChat, when X-Chat (2) is true open source, and should be updated soon.
If you do end up purchasing official XChat for Windows, you can replace the X-ChatPortable\App\X-Chat binaries with the C:\Program Files\XChat binaries. I believe all the same variables for redirecting the 'PATH' of the settings are the same.

Thanks, and don't be confused... ;)
Yes, he may be updating them now soon, but who's to say if he'll keep up on it? I will wait and see. He's currently like 4 builds behind, I think, and that makes me a little uncomfortable.
Thanks for your kind reply. I appreciate it.
Uncomfortable
Which is more uncomfortable? Someone who is a bit slow on building legal, legitimate open source builds of a piece of software. Or someone who is illegally building a partially open source package mixed with a closed source DRM component in violation of the GPL and copyright law who won't let you use it without paying an 'unlock' fee.
Live with purpose.
Touche
Though it's quite obvious I know little of open source software and ethics, I can't deny that you make a very good point.
Where can I read up on details about this "closed source DRM component" inclusion?
I may be ignorant on the topic, but it's nothing some education can't cure. :)
Here
You can read it right... about... here to get the just of it.

Yes
Yes, he is quite behind. I think he has a lot going on with school and such. You're right, we don't know if he'll keep it up, though I've asked him to. So if he does get the next reply out shortly, I'd say use it, and then if there's another huge differentiation in releases between official and his, sure, buy the official.
Edit: I like John's reply better. :)

Thanks for your work!
Thanks to all the X-Chat developers and those who made the Portable X-Chat!! I am using this with the Dropbox and so far so goo. It syncs to 3 computers and I will let you know how it goes!
Thanks
Thanks for the kind words. For the record, links are not allowed in signatures, but can be put in the 'Homepage' field on your account page which will show up next your username when posting.
