Could we start implementing re-naming of folders to include file versions? It can be annoying having to open the application if you just want to see if it is up-to-date (like if you can't remember if you downloaded that update or not, etc).
Would be greatly appreciated, and I can't see it being much work...

I'm gonna say the answer is no. I hate when software developers do that. It's understandable for some in terms of incompatibilities, but the installers could handle that anyway. I want just AppNamePortable. If you want, when installing, tack the version number of the installer you just clicked on to it. We'd have to account for removing or renaming any previous releases, and it doesn't make any sense.
You wouldn't have to rename/remove previous releases... That's like changing old versions of programs to include the features of the new versions. It's not needed.
I'm only asking for you to stick the version number at the end, not yelling "HI, I'M HERE TO ANNOY YOU PATRICK!". EG: FirefoxPortable v3b5, etc etc.
If it annoys you that much, you could have a tick box option to turn it on/off.
I'm only saying as I think John would. He wants to keep the installer simple, no extra options, so a checkbox wouldn't be included.
If you didn't remove or rename the folders of previous releases what would you do? The person that doesn't know what they're doing would have like 12 Mozilla Firefox, Portable Editions in there menu.

Yeah that would get pretty complicated, but I'm sure you could make the installer look for versions and overwrite them, use a wild card to over write it.
Yeah, instead of renaming I could just fix 123 references to it all over my portable system....Sounds like it's gonna save my time.

Far more work than it's worth... it would become a maintenance mess (which one did the user want to upgrade)... most users don't browse into folders, they use the PortableApps.com Menu or another launch menu of some sort. It's just bad practice. Locally installed apps don't do this either (nor should they).
The only time we do a different folder is for the test releases of Firefox (the current 3.0 beta for instance) in which case it defaults to FirefoxPortableTest.
The next menu release allows you to see an app's version by hovering over the icon.
