Have you tried the app amsn. this is an opensorce clone of msn/windows live mesenger. it has all the extra features of msn including Email client, webcam, winks, nudges etc. it is stil in pre-release stage though. but still a good app i cant wate for the full release.

AFAIK
There isn't a pop3 checker for pidgin yet. If you have an aol, yahoo, or msn account, they will check your email for you by default. Gmail will do it also. Outside of the built-in protocols I don't think there is a way to do it.
