InfraRecorder Portable 0.45 Pre-Release 2Submitted by Travis Carrico on April 28, 2008 - 4:37pm
This has been released. Thanks for testing! InfraRecorder has been updated to version 0.45 (changelog). Hopefully this fixes many of the issues people have had. There shouldn't be any more UPX problems either, since now the only things UPX'd are the main 2 exes and the codecs. I've made a few code improvements when going through it and improved the registry handlers for the Cygwin keys for the possible situation if some other program creates cygwin values after infrarecorder portable has already been launched. Please test everything out and let me know. InfraRecorder Portable 0.45 Pre-Release 2 3 MB, 6.6 MB installed Notes: also, John, can you fix the fact that http://portableapps.com/InfraRecorderPortable does not redirect to the InfraRecorder Portable page? Remove LAME
We'll need to remove lame and continue to have it be a separate download... otherwise everyone in the US and other locals would be unknowingly breaking the law. We'll have to remove it from BonkEnc as well.
Technically, I don't think LAME compiled is allowed to be hosted on SourceForge at all... anyone know?

I read in Lame docs that
I read in Lame docs that LAME is almost a proof of concept project and meant to be distributed as source only because apparently it contains patented parts.
But about sourceforge hosting I don't know. I know sometimes SourceForge allows non open source things hosted as exception. So maybe the project has permission to do so, I don't know. So I guess the LAME devs would know if they are allowed or not.
Pre-Release 2
ok, i removed LAME from the main download for Pre-Release 2. i didn't even know it was illegal in the US.
Yeah
The mp3 format is patented. It's illegal to distribute an encoder with software without permission from Thomson/Fraunhofer (which means paying $$$). The loophole seems to be that if you distribute the encoder separately (as in, not bundled with something else), you're in the clear.
I don't get it myself.
Nope.
The encoder is distributed in source format and the only official binaries are distributed by external entities. The users are then required to download these unofficial binaries. This makes it somewhat legal :)
Waiting for Rocks'n'Diamonds Portable? Fear not, it's coming soon.

I've just tried it with vista ultimate sp 1, and it runs well and doesn't leave anything obvious behind.

What are we thinking on this one?

there haven't been really any replies to this thread but it's ready. there aren't any upx issues and the code's good. you need to make http://portableapps.com/infrarecorderportable redirect to the infrarecorder page though and also where did you ever see that the mp3 plugin was for video dvds? the video burning is for ripped dvds not your own compilation; the plugin is for ripping mp3s i think.
Ok
There are a ton of URLs I have to catch up on. I know already.
I didn't say anything about what the MP3 plugin is for.

.
oh, well your initial version you did of infrarecorder 0.43 said it was for video dvds so i assumed it was and that's why it says that on the download page. i'll change the description then
Hmm
I think it is, isn't it? It's an MPEG plugin not just MP3 isn't it?
Live with purpose.
lame
well lame is just a mp3 encoder and all the other .irc files in there exist so you can rip audio tracks. and there was never any note about needing it for video dvds on their site. it didn't used to say what it was for but now it says
Note: The InfraRecorder installation package does not include the plug-in needed to encode MP3-files due to patent license restrictions. This does not affect all countries.
about the license and other countries ...
so if this was hosted on a non-US Sourceforge site, could it be distributed that way? Or is the license problem coming up when the program is _used_ in a trouble zone?
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
lame can be hosted on
lame can be hosted on sourceforge, because we and infrarecorder are both hosting the plugin on sourceforge, but it is kept separate because of patent issues, because people in some countries can't "legally" download it. when it's separate they can choose to not download it. even though all other audio encoder programs distribute lame with them, john thinks we should keep it this way, so that's how we're doing it.
SF = US
SourceForge itself is a US-based entity, so there's no such thing, really as a non-US SourceForge site. The owners of the MP3 patents have only gone after certain projects when they get to a certain popularity.

...
why not just use the ogg vorbis plugin instead? Vorbis is a supereor audio codec anyway ;) (although I would just use cdex for my ripping needs .....)

the vorbis plugin is
the vorbis plugin is included. you can rip wav, wma, ogg, and you need the plugin for mp3. i agree that ogg is good, but mp3 is still the main format. i doubt you can put ogg files on every mp3 player or make a mp3 cd of ogg files and software you may want to use audio tracks for may not support it. windows media player doesn't even play it by default. there are many changes needed before we can all switch to ogg
release
so what's holding this app up? it's been sitting here 2 weeks. not many people reported back testings but there shouldn't be any problems to begin with and i think it's past time to get this out. agreed?
Tomorrow?
Good to go tomorrow? Anything special in the announcement?
Actually, you can start the announcement and post it... it just won't be public until I set it as public.

template?
well i think i see how to make an announcement but is there a template to use for it or do i just type like normal?

Edit the previous InfraRecorder announcement and grab the HTML from there.

Just find the previous release: click search with a blank box to get the advanced search page and then enter 'infrarecorder released' (without quotes) and tick the story box and submit.
Look at the HTML of the page and find the
<div class="content">tag. Between that and the next</div>is the content of the story.Live with purpose.
I'm a little late to this thread
But since no one linked to the LAME Wikipedia page during the "legality discussion", here ya go.
