Sandboxie

I know Sandboxie isn't open source and isn't a viable candidate, but is there an open source program that is similar to or does what Sandboxie does? Sorry if this is posted else where, but what I entered in the search box, only brought me results of
software that was tested in sandboxie. I was thinking this would be worthwhile if you downloaded something questionable and wanted to try it out before actually installing it. I know about the usual security stuff, download from reputable sites, scan with a/v, spyware detection, etc. My thought was, a new program from your favorite site, a beta release, something that you aren't quite knowledgeable or sure about. Thanks for the replies.

JauntePE

Try looking at JauntePE - details are at https://portableapps.com/node/7707. It'll explain everything. Note Ryan's comment about his hook work. With something like that, and if Redllar makes it open-source, that would be a great open-source program. Anyway, try reading up on it.

Not what you asked, but

wraithdu did create a portable version of Sandboxie
http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2299&postdays=0&postorder=asc...

I've used Sandboxie for a while, installed on my own pc hard-drive, and have not tried that portable version. From early discussions, I remember it required installation of drivers/dlls to the local machine (which would require admin rights), and then remove those when quitting the app, but that might have changed by now.

I wouldn't be wanting to test new/questionable apps on someone else's machine, but a portable sandbox could be very useful for creating a safe surfing environment, etc.

(and JauntePE is truly wonderful, it is too bad the developer has withdrawn his product from download --- you would need to find someone to give you a copy.)

Thanks for the link (I didn't

Thanks for the link (I didn't want to advertise my own freeware/shareware launcher Wink )

To clarify, Sandboxie itself requires admin rights to function, so it is only partially portable by our standards. Still, I use it every day at work.
