Application: Virtual Volumes View
Category: Utilities
Description: VVV is an application that catalogs the content of removable volumes like CD and DVD disks for off-line searching. Folders and files can also be arranged in a single, virtual file system. Each folder of this virtual file system can contain files from many disks so you can arrange your data in a simple and logical way. VVV also stores metadata information from MP3 files: author, title, album and so on. It is possible to share the same catalog, stored in a network server, among Windows, Linux and OSX computers.

(In laymen's terms: It indexes your 100 disks to one file so you can ask the one file for information about all your disks. - TimClark)

Pre-Release

On Patrick's recommendation, I think it's time we went pre-release. Anyone have a high res version of the icon for a splash?

Live with purpose.

Tango?

I think it's just a tango icon for a CD-ROM if I remember correctly.

big one

the big one is different... and it can't be Tango since Tango isn't GPL compatible.

Live with purpose.

But

But oh but, it was Tango indeed. Anywho, I just checked the credits and LOGAN made the icon, so if anyone has a larger version, it should be him

I can make a larger version

I can make a larger version if needed. It's just the CD and magnifying glass from Everaldo's crystal set

Yeah

I thought they looked Crystal. That'd be great if you could do that up when you get a chance.

It's done

Splash

Update

Whoops, I almost overlooked the pre-release, sorry guys :)

Well here it is, VVV Pre-Release 1 featuring the new splash screen and the latest PortableApps.com installer.

Having additional Languages available on release would be nice, help appreciated.

PS. I noticed the splash so need to change the portableapps app url. Will do that for pre-release 2 soon.

Hang On

The VVVPortable URL is a bit silly, so I'll change it to the full name.

Live with purpose.

Updated

Just reload the splash screen posted above and it's using the new URL.

Live with purpose.

Update

I updated this release to Pre-Release 2. No changes other than the PortableApps.com splash screen has been updated with the latest version which now shows the correct URL. (Thanks John)

On a statistical note, Pre-release 1 was downloaded 27 times. I don't expect everybody re-downloading it just for the updated splash screen though.

Cheers.

I just tried

Prerelease 1 and loved it. Nothing left behind and no errors found. Nice App!

no problems with pre-release 2 so far

I never got around to testing pre-release 1, but so far pre-release 2 runs will in Vista Ultimate SP1 and leaves nothing obvious behind

Translations

VVV 0.9 shows the Language of the Windows language on default if it's available. It can be overruled by defaulting to English regardless the Windows language. For now only English and Italian languages are available. Please help with translating VVV into additional languages by translating the vvv.po file.

More information about translating can be found here: http://vvvapp.sourceforge.net/how_to_translate_vvv.htm

I personally would like to have the selection of the language independent to the Windows language and the developer stated about this issue: "I am not sure that letting the user choose a language among all the available ones can be useful for end users, and it would take some time to develop. I will see if somebody will ask for it."

Choosing the language independent of the Windows language would be cool more so when the PortableApps.com menu will support that in a future release. In any case a change to the VVV application (if any) would be done in one of the next versions. Still it would be cool to have multiple languages available. Please help us translate VVV into more languages and also post your opinions about the implementation of the languages by posting here. I will refer the developer to this page to review the replies. Thanks.

As far as VVV 0.9 is concerned, all seems to work fine. Maybe additional languages would spur another release, but we have to wait and see.

Well...

Well i did a regshot and...

I get a ROOT:\*.hiv file. is that normal? and you only have two in VirtualVolumesViewPortable.ini which is DisableSplashScreen=false
WaitForVirtualVolumesView=true only. And overall, looks good. ;)

Reopen the last used catalog on startup

Hi

I use two PCs with my portable apps and they each assign a different drive letter to my USB drive. This is causing a problem with the last used catalog feature of this software if I open the catalog at home it is assigned the F drive and then when I open the application at work it can not find the file on the F drive because work assigns it a different drive letter.

Hope this makes sense, is there anything that can be done other than my changing the USB Drive assignment on one of the PCs?

I'm unsure how to handle this

I'm unsure how to handle this excactly. I know that if you create a new catalog in the Documents folder of the portable drive and use the load button again it will open the Documents folder on the current drive to open the catalog.

I'll look into this.

Ah I have a work round, I

Ah I have a work round, I edited the vvv.ini file and removed the drive letter from the path leaving just \portableapps\etc... rather than f:\portableapps\etc... and this seems to have done the trick. I assume I'll have to do the same for each catalog I create?
