"Check for updates" disabled

The menu option is disabled, and I'm pretty sure it's something Ubuntu did (updates to Firefox are handled by the package management system here) when I was using my profile under Linux (I'm back to Windows now). The obvious preferences in about:config are not the culprit (I've checked them already). Does anyone know how to reverse this?
