Mac-On-A-Stick

Move If Needed...
Are there any newer Mac's on a stick out there that are portable or is it just the old school jazzy screen thing?

Probably not

There was a debate here: https://portableapps.com/node/12905 about whether to even keep it or not. If you read the entire post, there are some votes to ditch it, some to keep it. The majority of the "ditch it" crowd, wanted it replaced with some form of Linux.

I am one of the people for

I am one of the people for ditching it. not because i am pro linux but it requires a ROM of a older outdated MacOS that can only run MacOS 7.6 at the most. yea i still have that OS but finding the ROM is just as sketchy as the BIOS for a PSX/2 emulator or ROMS for a emulator. I find it nice that it is avalible but it hasnt been updated in a long time and i wonder how many people actually use it.

no i dont mean ditch it completely but at least set it in a Archive section.

I am on the ditch it part too

While they don't make the Mac-on-a-stick easy to install (aka: a really simple for n00bs tut or an auto-install script) it should be ditched. If they manage to make something then I don't mind keeping it for nostalgia (I am liking vintage software recently Biggrin ).

Also, Corrupt a Wish is a game where someone makes a wish, and you have to grant it, but make a special clause that makes the wish useless, for example:

- I wish a pool.
- Wish granted, but you had no means to fill it with water.

Then the person who corrupted the wish makes a new one, like for example:

- I wish for stuff.

So the next people can corrupt it and the game continue.

There are new rules though, for example:

  • On the first season we had a really big problem with replies that broke the layout, so from now on you must make new comments instead of replying to wishes (tip: Home and End button on your keyboard allow you to reach the top and bottom of the page, allowing to reach faster the "New Comment" link on top of the thread)
  • No more seasons. Normally when corrupt a wish reached one page of comments there would be the tradition of making a new season to make things simpler. This has been filling the Off-Topic forum, and Moderators have been getting mad with it, so we decided that we would stop on 9th season and don't make any more season (and I have been always requesting to Mods to join all seasons on 1 with all comments there instead but no one agrees with me Blum ). (tip: on the forum page where all threads are show you can click the "New" link on the comments column to go directly to the new comments)

And that is all.

Blue is everything.

So Corrupt A Wish is

So Corrupt A Wish is basically something that somebody made up as a game in the OffyToppy which has nothing to do with anything?
OK...*looks around room and backs out slowly*
Yeah, I thought it was something that we had to do or something for being members on the site...

you are not seeing my point.

you are not seeing my point. its not a case of how easy it is ti install but more of how to get it working. Then there is the fact of getting software for it. For me it would not be too hard because i have been gathering software for the older OS since 1993. i still have quite a number of the big names software peices. for example you cannot have any OFFICE higher than 98 using the program. You cannot use any Photoshop higher than 5.5 (and it would be slow as @#^& too). I dont recomend ditching it but Archiving it would be a idea worth looking into.

You're right

We have different views, I only though they were similar Blum

I do think that it is not because it is old that should be archived, because it can still be famous as a vintage app, also, this site never had archives for apps (only the sourceforge ones for older versions of an app) so I think it would be strange to have an archive with 1 app.

I think that most emulators should not be used for daily basis, but for

1) replacing apps that we can't have with the current host

2) have it to "remember the old days"

3) Actually be used on a daily basis, on a virtualization system on a company Blum

I only recommend ditching if an easier way to install is not found also. My advice would be a custom NSIS script and launcher my by the man himself (John for who didn't understood Blum ).

Blue is everything.

i am currently...

working on a tutorial for thoes of us who want to actually sucsessfully make a working Mac-on-Stick without just downloading the premade one.

and as for corrupt a wish, basically you "Wish" for something, someone reads it and "Corrupts" it and then wishes for something themselves. if you read some of the posts you will get it.

newer version? Legal? what

newer version? Legal? what do you mean.

the project it was based off of is dead so there are no updates. The OS cannot be upgraded because it emulates a 680030 processor at the max. MacOS X doesnt support that processor and very few Linux os' do.

There are soo many USB linux Distros that they cannot be named outside of something like a Wiki article. There is DamnSmallLinux, Blueflopps, SUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora, Slackware and many others that are avalible on a USB drive.

when i said newer versions
i meant is johnny going to create a portable Mac on a stick that is equal to apple's mac's today(one that's capable of running GarageBand or something)? Not the whole "I'll make you blind with my pupil-dialating desktop w/ weird trashcan Mac-On-A-Stick"

That would require an x86 emulator like Virtual PC or VMWare, which I don't see happening any time soon.

As i mentioned Mac on a Stick

As i mentioned Mac on a Stick emulates a 680030 processor. Garage band will never work on that hardware EVER.

There is something called PearPC that emulates a PPC macintosh that might be able to use newer software. But porting it to be a portable app will be damned near impossible. Also it is a dead project as well. last update was in 2005. So if you want your spiffy programs go complain to them (the creators of the non portable source) and Steve Jobs.

I sould take a stab at Mac on a stick agian so i can finaly play Pax Imperia agian.

Useless?

So What actually can be done with Mac On A Stick if GarageBand can't work on it?
I'm guessing it's one of those (well at least we can look back to see where we've come from with Mac)right?

The OS and Mac it emulates

The OS and Mac it emulates predates Garage band. For those of us who ammased a large collection of Mac software would use it.

For example i have:
Warcraft (1)
Pax Imperia
Escape Velocity
Photoshop 5 (and 5.5)
Office 98 (mac office went from 5 to 98 to OFFICE X)
Flash MX
Quicktime Pro 5

and more. i have about 3 thousand dollars worth of software that i have collected over the years. it is useful for people like me with tons of the old software.

Well...

For all us young people who aren't old and were not around when IBM was a distant thought...(Just Kidding Dude)
Well that just sucks man because I have no old software,(or any software for Mac for that matter), so it's now come to my attention that i can't use it. That's why i was hoping for something that can run GarageBand on that...Oh Well...
(I am a PC and I am better than Mac)

You sound like you are

You sound like you are trolling for a debate. Get VMware (not portable) and use install MacOSX.

If you cant do that... then SUFFER without Garageband.

When it needs a serial it

When it needs a serial it means you need to buy it. But I am pretty sure VMWare has a free version of their app....
