ok so i know its been asked before
1. can we use the portable apps logo on a cd of the portable apps suite
2. can we redistribute the portable apps on a cd for profit (me thinks not but asking any way)
3. is there a list of people already doing this?
p.s. im in Australia can print labels directly to cds and they look good so what i really want to know is am i allowed to make a good looking portable apps cds for distribution/redistribution to my clients/customers? and if so does it require the use of the "this software is freely available form the portableapps.com website" disclaimer i need to put on most other Open source software?
thanking you in advance

You could try contacting John T. Haller, this site's owner through the Business contact address. It make take some time to get a response as John is currently very busy with legal negotiations with some big-name hardware and software vendors so we can move to distributing PortableApps.com application pre-loaded on flash drives, and so we can start distributing non-OSS software officially.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
that PortableApps should start distributing non-OSS software, even if it is totally legal, and he has agreements with vendors. I'm totally for making branded USB drives, as John is a great guy and should be rewarded for his work, and I'll definitely buy a drive when it becomes available. But using proprietary software just isn't "right", you know? There's almost always a high-quality open source alternative available.
I think that non-OSS software would change the atmosphere of PortableApps, and not in a good way.
well personally a program like ccleaner and some of the other completely free software packages that u will find launchers for on the site are worth making available even if there not part of the "core package" as i would be wanting to add some of those packages on the disks i am wanting to make up for distribution all im waiting on is the ok and i just can''t find johns business address can ne1 help?
ok im going to try email address removed hope its the right address
[email address removed by moderator JTH. It is exceedingly bad form to post someone else's email address "in the clear" in a forum]

You can't include stuff like CCleaner and the other free software that we have only launchers for on your disks without permission from the publisher. (We asked, they said no)
And I've removed your website from your signature again. URLs and websites are not permitted in signatures.

Does this blanket having an official version of CCleaner Portable once the PA Launcher is opened up? eg Never will be an official CCleaner portable on PortableApps.com?

i understand i can't include any proprietary software on these disks without permission and at this point the disks are a theory only as i am still awaiting a reply from you upon weather i can distribute the suite and conditions on doing so so it is null and mute
im sorry bout that i wasn't actually trying to advertise o anything but its cool i wont put any of thoes things in my signiture but.... why remove the email adress i used to atempt to contact u as im surte if it was the wrong one some1 would have told me but meh i understand that i broke the rules and u had to fix em up so its ok
long and short of post sorry bout breaking rules and still haven't got an answer to the question i posed

Posting anyone's address "in the clear" as in, as a text or mailto link in a forum or blog post is considered bad form as it makes it more likely to be harvested by spammers, get you on more spam lists and result in you getting more spam. Though the email address you posted is on the Contact Us page on this site, if you check the source, you'll see that it is obfuscated to deter harvesting.

ahh well i learn something new every day thank you for explaining
still is there an ofical line on distributing copies of your suite on cd as in well... the original question
i know u all do your best and i thank you for your patience
My opinion (and in no way have I verified this with John or anyone else) is that since the software is available for free download through the PortableApps.com site, it would be allowable to distribute the "officially supported" software "freely" on any media you care to use; however, you should never charge anyone more than the cost of the medium that you stored the programs on.
I myself have made a CD of all the "official" programs from the site as of around 2/1/2009 (so I have some old stuff already) for my own use, but if someone asks me to make a copy for them, I will not charge anything for them, unless they want to throw me a dime for the CD itself.
aka Major PITA... ask me what it means, as you will be amused...
Just don't go using e.g. HTML pages with the PortableApps.com&trade branding. It's a trademark of Rare Ideas, LLC (John's business) and may not be used lightly.
However, anyone can distribute the software as much as they like, in the original PortableApps.com installers. Under the GPL, you're allowed to charge $79,000 for a single CD if you like - but whether or not anyone'll buy it from you may be another matter...
If you're wondering, take the statement on the front page at face value:
Just remember, free to use, copy and share doesn't mean modify, steal or rebrand and remove copyright notices. Sure, you are allowed to modify them, but only within the bounds of the GPL and trademark law.
About the pricing issue, read the GPL (version 2 which is what we use) for more info. You may be surprised. Search for "charge" and read what you find.
