Can a usb version be used on the harddrive.
Not a portable hard drive but the main hard drive.
Running portable firefox 3.04 with no problems.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I wouldn't recommend

the PortableApps.com meun because it will change your C: icon, but the apps themselves can be ran from your system. I have done this and it does work, but there are a few minor bugs that you will encounter, like loss of file associations for one, but they aren't a major problem. I can't remember where it is, but there is a thread here about using PortableApps.com apps on older OS'es such as Windows 98, as a way to restore life to an obsolete system.

Not the app itself

If you install the menu, it will change the C: drive icon like it does with the icon of the flashdrive that you run PortableApps on. Installing the apps themselves, like Firefox Portable doesn't affect your icons. This happens if you install the PAM menu to the C: drive itself. I tried this and didn't really like it. I don't think it's an issue, just a preference.

At Jimmy Neutron - Sorry, bug was all I could think of at the moment. Anyway, one man's issue could be another man's preference, sorry for the confusion and scaring anyone.

It will only change the C: drive icon if you install it in the root directory (C:\). It won't hurt anything if you put it in a folder. And you can restore the icon just by deleting autorun.inf, so no big deal.

Umm, think about what you just asked for a second.

You're saying that when you first installed FFP, it asked if you had a fast drive or not. Now you're upgrading in-place--on the same drive you installed it to originally. If it was a fast drive before, it's not going to suddenly become a slow drive. That's why it didn't ask you the second time.

Makes sense, right?

Agreed

Agreed
On the first installation it happened.
So out of curiosity deleted the firefox portable folder and then ran the installer again. It did not ask if it was a fast drive .
Since you can not remove the program throgh add remove programs always
wondered where that setting was.

Do you have any idea where that setting is .
Thanks for your help.

It should ask you again if you delete the FirefoxPortable folder.

Maybe the newer versions don't care and it has been removed. Or maybe it was found to be a useless question and removed.

Issues not bugs

If it doesn't work the way you want, it should be called a problem or issue.

A bug means it does something wrong that the programmer didn't intend to happen.

Please don't scare people away by using the wrong word.

I would...

...recommend it, that is...

Altho' you point out some possible negatives to the PA menu per se, it seems to me the person was asking about apps which are portable moreso than about "PAmenu" specifically.

I have found no downside myself to using portable apps in general, and I try to in fact limit myself to portable apps rather than installed ones since I first discovered the concept a cpl yrs back. I'll only use or buy an "installable" app if I can't find a better freeware alternative that runs portably in order to do the task(s) that I'm seeking to do.

Bon appetit.
