Hello,
How can I have my thumb drive require a password before allowing access? (I used to use a u3 thumb drive and it was set up that way.)
Basically I am looking to make my entire drive un-accessable without a password.
Ideally I would like to make just portions of it protected but that might be more difficult?
Thanks for your help.
Carlos
best option: buy a new flash drive that offers hardware encryption. Software encryption usually requires admin privileges to run so if you are on a guest account aka limited account then you're screwed as you can't access it period. Hardware encryption doesn't need that as it's in the hardware.

I didn't really understand your answer. Could you (or someone else) explain a little more.
Software Encryption = Admin privledges in turn means if you are not the admin on the computer you are on then you can't use it.
Hardware Encryption = settings in the hardware. You can use it any place.
Is that simple enough for you?

Now I understand. I usually have admin privledges but not always, so hardware looks like the way to go.
Thanks again.
Any one else have any input?
Been using U3 and just deleted it when I discovered how great the PortableApps Platform is. But then discovered that it doesn't contain a method to password protect as did U3. Too late to reinstall as I'm leaving today for 5 weeks and this will cause some stress! I once lost a pair of flash drives that were protected so didn't worry much, but now will be overly concerned. (FYI, discovered on another thumb drive that U3 can be disabled, yet the password protection sticks, and still need to input the PW.)
If Sandisk can have U3 don't understand why PortApps couldn't come up with something comparable. Don't understand the comment further down as to admin privileges for it certainly works in U3 without such on the computers in use -- so guess they're saying that the software is built into Sandisk's hardware?
U3 uses a hardware trick to make the other partition lock. But they made it only work with their own system and locked everyone else out.
Other drives with true hardware encryption like the Kingston DataTraveller Secure or the ClipBio allow you to secure your drive and use any software you want like the PortableApps.com Platform.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
You can also encrypt them with Toucan!
Toucan only encrypts the backups it makes. it doesn't give the encryption this user wants silentcon

toucan can encrypt any individual file
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
try using something like TrueCrypt But as Zach said it does not work unless you have administrative privileges.
U3 uses a partition that the computer will view as a cd and auto play, however with vista now allowing auto-play that idea no longs works a well as it used to.
hope that helps

Just drag and drop the files to the dropzone to encrypt and decrypt.
Very cool. I will start looking at it as soon as possible!
Thanks
