First you can't even download it; it's an optional component of specific motherboards. Second, it's not something you would take from PC to PC. Third it's basically a stripped-down Linux OS designed for fast booting. What you want is a "Linux on a stick" solution where you boot to a Linux OS from a flash drive. That's nothing like that.
I'm not so sure we are looking at the same thing, and for the other comments its exe so technically i can be backwards engineered to work
here for a better reference

The app this comment and the one at the bottom from 2013 are referencing (remote access software) is a different app from the one posted about in 2009 (a motherboard dependent quick-launch OS independent of Windows).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
thnx i was wandering what they where talking about

This is a motherboard-level thing; it sounds like something that you couldn't even get to go in a VM. And there's nothing to get - looks as though you need to get it with a motherboard.
So sorry, but it's utterly impossible. And not really relevant.
I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
I bet the browser would work better than this tardid cr@p here and at mozilla.com
Or did you expect me to defend Firefox? Yeah, I like it, but you're right, at least on a fundamental level.
You miss the point though. Think of it as layers, like a sandwich or sheets of paper. Ground level is your BIOS. First floor is Splashtop. Second floor is Windows. Third floor is the application, and the virtual machine. Fourth floor is the virtual application or the web application.
With me so far? PortableApps.com can only get down to the third floor. No lower. Beyond that you need access to the machine level that most work and school computers don't allow. Not only that, it's got to be installed on a machine in a chip, it's not something you can pass around.
And the reason a well-made browser is going to be better than Firefox, etc., is because it doesn't have Windows running in the background. It has more resources available to it.
I've been saying for years that PC games need to reboot the computer and boot into a stripped-down OS (likely Unix-based) that serves no purpose other than to execute the game. Huge performance increase.
But the biggest problem with all this is, the web browser in Splashtop looks a whole lot like Firefox. Firefox comes with a lot of Linux distros. Splashtop looks like Linux. See where I'm going with this? In case you don't, Splashtop might be using Firefox, albeit a stripped-down fork of it.
Interesting word.
It's one thing to complain about software that you don't like; it's quite another thing to create a better alternative.
You asked, "Can you please offer it?" and received two very specific answers that explained why it can't be done. No need to be rude, now.
However, this site is always open to users that are willing to learn and develop applications.
If you dislike Firefox (which is the only official browser offered here), and you think you have something better, feel free to develop it yourself. There are lots of other browsers out there - Opera, Chrome, Iron, Konquerer, etc - so even if you can't get Splashtop to work, you have a lot to choose from!
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
I only use the geek.menu and the aforementioned (better) browser runs from that
Open Office is good sometimes, abiword too, HWiNFO32 and revouninstaller.
Infrarecorder is awesome however and 7zip is great too. Sumatra is cool.
Xenon needs work and keypass is pretty fantastic, eraser is a bit unusable (file permissions).
Im programs are ok but pidgin always I find some bug, so miranda works better and amsn looses the loopback and is poorly supported.
All this means to me is PA should provide some OS function so we could even fix windows if necessary, get the drift?
Thank you
P.S. Virtual Dub it's a bit sad it won't support MPEG2 natively anyone know why?
what Portable Apps is, and what it isn't.
So far, nobody here gets paid to provide apps, and nobody pays for the apps they download, so the concept that PA "should" do anything doesn't apply. They do try to adhere to the principles that they set for themselves, of course, but again, since none of them are paid, they don't have to do anything!
As for the quality of the apps that are offered here, are you sure you are distinguishing between the functions of the apps themselves, and the efforts of the developers here to portablize them?
With the exception of the PA menu, all of the apps you mentioned are developed and supported elsewhere. So, none of these developers are responsible for the native shortcomings of those apps.
If there are any bugs that ARE caused by the portablization of the apps, the developers here welcome feedback, so long as it's polite and constructive (and not demanding)!
It seems like you might have an objection to the selection of apps. But the people here are always trying to find the best apps to adopt, within the parameters for PortableApps.com:
- Open Source
- Launchers only for freeware (no changes to source code)
- Permission of the original developer
So if you find a better app that meets those parameters, you are free to ask for someone to pick it up, but there are no guarantees.
If you REALLY need to have some app portablized, and you can't wait or don't like the answers here, then you should learn to program and do it yourself!
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
Thanks for the nice reply. I will try and nice too.
All I was doing in that last rant was to take a bit of stock of what is going on, typically QC.
Anyhow, I doubt I could ever hope to program anything, the best I ever did was ECMA and the other meta style languages. If I had to I'd learn to code a driver for DSP audio but only if a particular company opted to no longer support their hardware.
I don't want to come across as being unappreciative of anyones' efforts because I do appreciate most things here even if they fall short of the mark, so long as there is potential I am always standing behind innovation and I hope you know which particular wonderful little app of which I refer
Thank you for your time in responding to my concerns.
There is a Windows client available from http://www.splashtop.com/streamer/downloadstart?platform=windows-client but when I asked about the possibility of a PortableApp this is the reply I received:
About the question, we guess you may mean the software in [ https://portableapps.com/ ]. Because we're not sure how PortableApps.com pack and move software, we worry that some registry keys got changed during the process. Maybe you may try or check with PortableApps.com before use it.
Over to you.
