problem with that Qemu uses a closed source component for the windows build, so we would need to recompile from scratch after we edit that need for it

try this

http://portableubuntu.sourceforge.net/

it is one of the more spectacular once, since it does not need any quemu nor is it any virtual machine, it runs parallel to windows using colinux kernel.

Really fun, runs fine at reasonable speed from stick and is in fact full ubuntu.

Has anyone tried PuppyLinux

Has anyone tried PuppyLinux which has more going for it than DSL? And which is similarly small sized, as opposed to the 400 odd megs of the ubuntu portable download?

Puppy in its basic form is around 60 to 80 megs as an ISO. Fully featured, perhaps 100 or so. I've been using it / playing with it for several years now.

Have you noticed editing is always needed for the inevitable typos that weren't there when you hit the "post" button?

Puppy Linux. Best portable os.

Puppy linux is one of the best os i seen especially for old computers. or usb drives. it is fast secure and installs to your usb easily from the cd.

there are many things easily to use on puppy. it is easy to set up and use. and takes up hardly any space on the hdd. there is even a portable apps menu compiled to work with the wine menu as the wine app manager.

puppy linux an be installed on a fat32, ntfs adn any number of linux partitions such as ext2, ext3, ext4. (note if you intend to put other files on the usb for use on other computers its is best to use fat32 to be accessible from any windows, linux or mac computer) to boot puppy all you need to do is make sure teh bios is set to boot from usb. . .

if you want to look into it further visit www.puppylinux.org and feel free to join the puppy linux irc support chat at #puppylinux on the freenode network.

puppy linux has lots of support and many versions depending on you use and need. it can be tweaked to your needs easily.

Puppy Linux's mission statement says:

* Puppy will easily install to USB, Zip or hard drive media.
* Booting from CD, Puppy will load totally into RAM so that the CD drive is then free for other purposes.
* Booting from CD, Puppy can save everything back to the CD, no need for a hard drive.
* Booting from USB, Puppy will greatly minimise writes, to extend the life of Flash devices indefinitely.
* Puppy will be extremely friendly for Linux newbies.
* Puppy will boot up and run extraordinarily fast.
* Puppy will have all the applications needed for daily use.
* Puppy will just work, no hassles.
* Puppy will breathe new life into old PCs

In my oppinion being a user of puppy linux. This is a good place to start for anybody looking for a portable OS. .
