Can anyone tell me quickly, and in a nutshell, where to download and how to add new fonts in Open Office 3... getting bogged down with tech jargon and I figure there must be a simple way to do this...

Although it does sound like you're asking to add fonts to your computer for a standard installation...
If you take the portable version "on the road" on a USB, put a copy of the "unusual" ttf fonts in this "truetype" folder:
...\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable\App\openoffice\share\fonts\truetype
No "installation" needed.
Portable OO will see them and use them even if the computer you are on doesn't ahve them
Keep in mind if you're sending a document file to someone else, that fancy font you specify does not travel with that document to another computer. If the fonts aren't on the other computer, some available default will be used. To get around that, after saving your document as an odt, export a PDF version, which has the fonts embedded, and can be read by any pdf reader.
Of course, if you're just printing it on the machine with the desired fonts it won't matter.
