I've just one little question.
Maybe it would be possible to answer it myself by browsing the site or building myself but its easier and more convenient like this.
So, why is the AppLauncher necessary?
Well, I use the Apps as an alternative to systemwide installations and it just crossed my mind whether or not the launcher is really necessary. If it is why and what does it?

It's not required at all,

It's not required at all, just makes things a little easier for those of us that use them portably. It's essentially a Start menu for the portable apps stored X:\PortableApps\

Edit: I just realized you may be talking about the Portable.exe and not the PortableApps.com Menu. the Portable.exe is used to keep the app portable. it ensures settings are saved under Portable\Data\settings\ rather than left elsewhere on the system, and performs some other cleanup tasks. If an app is run without using the Portable.exe, settings could be left in the registry, in %APPDATA%, or wherever the app uses as default to store its settings, breaking portablility.
