...Before these guys rip you to shreds about pirating Office, let me attempt to... soften the blow. First of all, PortableApps.com is a legit site, and can't help with pirated software. Also, because ThinApp costs nearly $10,000 to license, apps created with it are generally created with a pirated version. So we're not just talking about a stolen TV here, we're talking about a stolen TV hauled away in a stolen van. While wearing stolen clothes, to run the metaphor into the ground.

All that being said, I don't have any ThinApps myself; they're generally trouble. $10,000 for something NSIS, a free and open source installer can do for free? Possibly better?

Anyway, ThinApp itself may not be compatible with Windows 7, for whatever reason. OpenOffice most likely is, and it's free. Probably not as pretty as Office, but it's legal.

Thin Apps v NSIS

I am rather new to Portable applications. I do develop Windows Software and have been researching as much as possible about different Portable technologies.

Having read a little on ThinApp I noticed it appears a good idea as it ISOLATES the App from the OS.

I have looked at the U3 as well.

Thanks you for your comment that NSIS can produce the same Portable type of application as ThinApp.

If you're developing the application, it should be trivial to make the application portable. Just have it write to a .ini file (or at least give the end-user this option). Any app that 1) doesn't write outside its folder (subfolders are OK) and 2) doesn't depend on .NET, Java, etc., is basically portable. For PAF (PortableApps.com Format) it just needs to save everything in ..\..\Data.

ThinApp IS a good idea, but it's very expensive. It really isn't intended to be used by ordinary people, it's a corporate thing. They don't have licensing set up for "just anybody" to use it.

NSIS isn't supposed to be used to make portable launchers, it's supposed to make installers (Nullsoft Installer System, it stands for, and originated as Winamp's installer), but since it's free and open source, this deviation is legal and legitimate.

U3 is garbage, at least a mess, only special flash drives can use it.

I'm not 100% sure that NSIS can do the same thing as ThinApp, but close enough. It's like Word and OpenOffice.org Writer. Word is prettier and has a few more features, and costs a lot. OOo Writer is free, but it *basically* does the same thing. Same with ThinApp and NSIS.

NSIS

Thanks for the informative reply NathanJ79.

I am now understanding the Portable Apps Format.

I have known of the NSIS as an Installer but have been using InnoSETUP for that purpose with some Windows Software.

I have begun putting a program into perspective with the Format used. Not hard to do seeing as it is my own software!

So next step is to build it with the new configs with my Compiler.

Then I have to figure the steps of using NSIS to make it ready for PortableApps Installation.

I found some other interesting items and understanding in the forums such as the small program 'Portabilizer' which seems easy to follow. So will have a look at that later on after I achieve the first working software app on the USB.

Thanks again for your informative reply to my post.

NSIS isn't using a virtual ,

NSIS isn't using a virtual , sandboxed environment like ThinApp does. ThinApp is in a way more powerful, but also way more expensive.

Also, ThinApp is currently not compatible with Windows 7, so you'll have to wait for a new version of ThinApp to come out. You'll probably have to recompile with the new version for the application to work.

Oh, and it might have to do with the PatchGuard protection on Windows 7, which blocks any modification to the kernel, which this kind of virtualization does (like Sandboxie). This won't be easily worked-around, if it is possible.

WHY????

Why do people think we do ThinApps here? Does PortableApps.com come up as a search result or something?

That is almost as annoying as "Can someone make Office 2007 portable for me?"

Life is about the journey not the destination!
