Open Office Portable 3.1.1 crash

PortableUser2009 - November 4, 2009 - 4:02am

Hi,

if I try to start Open Office Portable 3.1.1
on Windows Vista Home Premium it crashes after startup.
I receive the system message
"Open Office does not work any more".

Any idea how to solve this problem?
That would be great!

Path

What path do you have it installed to? Anything longer than X:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable will cause issues. Otherwise, is it an upgrade or fresh install? If an upgrade, try a fresh install.

why?

fwiw, i've been using openoffice portable 3.1.0 installed to
"D:\Documents and Settings\x\papps\OpenOfficePortable_3.1.0"
without a problem.

Open office

has some very long paths internally and doesnt handle long paths well. Its just the way the program works.
This has been like this since a while now, I dont know why yours has worked till now.

a hack to use OpenOffice Portable from a long path

Here is a hack to make OpenOffice Portable run from a long path:
* Install it on a short path first, eg. C:/portable/OpenOfficePortable
* open it and go through the setup process
** if you want it to use portable java, go to Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->Java and turn on the radio button. OpenOffice Portable will ask for a restart.
* Restart OpenOffice portable and then close it.
* Now you can move it (and the portable java) to the long path you want.

I run OpenOffice Portable from C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Desktop\Useful\_Utils\portable without problems.

Try another version and don't

Try another version and don't use store it in too many folders which can cause it to crash or malfunction.
