ClamWin portable it is not really portable

since2004 - November 16, 2009 - 6:23am

Hi all, I tried to use ClamWin Portable and noticed two problems:

- there is not a command switch on portableclamwin executable to call clamtray
- if I set clamtray.exe to start with windows it does not load preferences from portable folder
- there is not a switch in clamtray.exe to force it to load preferences from a file
- I was not able to locate the file which clamtray load settings from

with these problems clamwin portable it is not really usable, because you dont have it running in background for scheduled updates, scheduled scans, email notifications, and so on.

Does someone know a solution for these issues?

Thank you all.

ClamTray not included

ClamTray is not included in the launcher nor will it show in the menu. ClamTray is not considered a part of ClamWin Portable. Apps that offer to start with Windows are, by defition, not portable.

ClamTray is designed to run on a local system, all the time, and do schedules, updates and quickly launch ClamWin itself. As ClamWin Portable is transient in nature because it is a portable app, ClamTray isn't applicable to it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Please consider to include ClamTray

I got your point, it is right. But please consider that a lot of people (me included) use portable apps from usb keys but also from hard drives, _instead_ of the counterpart installed apps. I do that regularly. In this way I have almost all my programs with their setting in another partition always at hand, even if I change workstation or restore a previous image of Windows with tools like TrueImage. The only thing that I have to do after restoring an image is to put links to portable apps that resides in another partition in autostart folder, and I am done. I do it for example for Launchy, portable Lingoes and so on. It would be nice to have such a support for ClamTray. Regarding Firefox and Thunderbird, I use the installed versions (because I like to register them as default applications for corresponding functions) but relocate their profiles on another partition. I do it since Firefox 0.6 Smiling if there would be a way to register / de-register them as default application from a Portable apps menu I could use portable versions. I understand that this is a somewhat extended reading of of portable application concept , but I think that a lot of users could find it really useful.
