Remove PortableApps.com Logo from the top PA.c menu. PortableApps.com Platform 2.0 Beta 4?

I been searching both here and google and I didn't find any posts/info on the subject so I thought I'd ask here... has this been spoken of before maybe somewhere I missed? Is this the right place to talk about it? and is it allowed?
I done it with mine and it seems to work with no adverse effects.
Can I post what I've done in this forum or will that be frowned upon?

How?

How did you do it then?

It wouldn't hurt to tell us and I don't think you are doing anything wrong.

I wouldn't

Whether or not it is frowned upon (and I'm sure you'll get some feedback on this), I wouldn't remove it.

To me, it's a sign of gratitude and respect for all John's work in creating the menu, this site, and the whole portable apps movement.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

I didn't do it for any disrespect to John

I've only removed the logo because I prefer a clean looking menu no disrespect intended. that is why I thought it best to ask first, Instead of just posting my bumbling findings. I've read through forum rules and "to me anyway" I didn't see why I couldn't. Also I know it's not for everyone I'm not trying to upset anyone and I don't want to p*ss the moderators and Dev teams off. I just wanted to share?.
I guess this way if I get told from John and the other moderators I'll just not post anything more on the subject.
Everybody is different and removing logo may only be for a minority of people.{well it's still there it's just 1px x 1px}
Thank you for your response and time

no adverst

there are no adverts poping up at any time and what you mean by 'clean'?
You can crate your own menu if you want and put own logo on it or no logo at all. So why don't you do it?

I think they mean the app

I think they mean the app splash screens.

These can be disabled if you use the PortableApps Platform by going to Options->Advanced in the Platform and checking the box that says "Disable App Splash Screens" - just note that this does not work for every app, but should work for most.

Open Source, Open Minded

@Debray6379 I don't really know how to do it. What most people would do if you want this kind of power would be to find another menu that you can use, like ASuite or SmithTechMenu.

@solanus I agree it would be nice to thank John for this, but I don't see this kind of branding as a way to show gratitude unless you're showing it off to a friend (branding does not do much more than remind us who did it. It does not even show up in our brains after a while.) Thanks for the blog post idea, though :-).

ASuite

Not wishing to steer people away from the Portable Apps Suite, but ASuite is very very similar and offers some great functionality. I'm actually a convert from PStart, which was just getting too slow with all the apps I had listed.

If you want to thank John with branding then I would think a nice big banner on your website/blog would do the trick better than any small icon on a local app every could. Which reminds me... Smile

Care to share?

Hi. Personally, I use PStart menu, instead of the PortableApps.com Menu. I've used the version 1 of PA.c Menu a long time ago, but I had a lot of problems with using it on PCs with different DPI settings so I switched to PStart (the DPI problem was fixed in version 1.5, but I still prefer PStart). Anyway, would you care to share how? I know I wanted to do this a way back when I was going to the High School. Professors there knew nothing about PortableApps, and I didn't want it to get banned from the PCs. Programs like Firefox.exe, IExplore.exe and cstrike.exe were already banned... But, even though I could run my Portable Firefox (thanks JTH for that), and some small games, the teachers could clearly see where I got it from, see that I can change the name of the executables, and see that they would have to ban all unauthorized *.exes, instead of banning particular .exes like up until then... Well, now is a bit to late for my needs, but still... Know-how is never a burden Smile

Ok this is how I did it

**!!MODERATORS PLEASE REMOVE THIS POST IF YOU DEEM IT INAPPROPRIATE!!**
I don't know if this has been done before, or even if I'm allowed to?. But I was tinkering around in PortableApps.com Platform 2.0 Beta 4 with PE Explorer (I was also able to locate this in reshacker & XNResourceEditor Portable)
anyway I worked out how to kind of remove the PortableApps.com Logo from the top of the PortableApps menu.
Here is what I did...
although this has worked without any problems for me>>
WARNING!!! YOU TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!! I DO NOT KNOW YET IF IT WILL EFFECT ANY PART OF PORTABLEAPPS PLATFORM OR YOUR DATE ON YOUR DRIVE!!!!!
Navigate to your- [Replace X with your Drive letter I'll use X as a generic Letter]
X:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\PortableAppsPlatform.exe and backup PortableAppsPlatform.exe FIRST!
then open PortableAppsPlatform.exe in your prefered resource Editor.
Then find RC Data.
under RC Data find TFRMENU
under TFRMENU find PortableAppsLogo: TImage
Then navigate to Width and Edit/Change the value to 1 (it can't be set to 0 the lowest I've found it can be set to is 1)
Then navigate to Height and Edit/Change the value to 1 (again it can't be set to 0 the lowest I've found it can be set to is 1)
Then replace your new edited in X:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com as PortableAppsPlatform.exe and your done

Remember to do all this without your portableapps.com Platform running.

I'd like to point out that I only did this to mine because I prefer a clean look for my menu.
this is the first time EVER! that I've tried to explain how to do anything like this and I've never done anything like this before.
Thank for your time and patience

TY for sharing this

and I don't think this is in violation to any rules, since the PA.c menu is OSI certified, and you are allowed to modify and/or recompile it if you wish. This is something similar, so you shouldn't get scolded for doing it. Nor for posting. However, as solanus said, most people probably should leave it as it is for paying respect to JTH and others for their hard work. Regardless of that, I'm sure that this will come in handy for those (they are probably not many) who REALLY need to hide/remove that logo when using (like I had to back in High School, but wasn't able to do it with this menu).

I hope there are no drawbacks of this workaround, and I'll try to test it in the next few days.

Thanks again, and cheers Smile

Respect and Drawbacks

I don't believe that anyone's disrespecting John by taking the logo off the top of their menu. Not if they just want a cleaner look. The Platform being open source, you're free to edit it and strip it of its branding. Redistribution, claiming it as your own, these things become dicey, but just taking the logo out? That is allowed. That's the magic of open source software.

There shouldn't be any drawbacks unless the hash of the platform's main .exe needs to be checked, because reshacking it would necessarily change the hash. But I don't think that will ever be an issue.

Still, I'd like a way to do it manually. If only the PortableApps.com logo were gone and the personal picture were moved to the center. That would be slick. Then just add keyboard browsing rather than rerouting them to pageUp/pageDown, and the ALT+# trick for favorites... lot of potential there.

set to "0"

Debray6379, I just used your tutorial and set the Width and Height to zero using PE Explorer.
It worked perfectly.

I am going to have a bash at moving the personal picture next.

Thanks.

Remove Bevel

To remove the bevel, just use a PNG. When you use a PNG, the bevel will be hidden. You can even use an alpha PNG so it'll blend in with the theme.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Moved PP

Well I moved my personal picture to the middle of the menu.

I just changed the left value to 179.

I also removed the icons and text for SEARCH and HELP which I never used.

Thanks for your tutorial Debray6379.

A little bit off topic but...

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to change the default folder structure in potableApps Platform 2.0 beta 4?
and if it is how?

Not easy

AFAIK, you would have to edit the source code and recompile it with the new folder structure... So don't get your hopes up. (I might be wrong, due to all the updates to the Platform, but this is how it was not so long ago).

Cheers Smile

Changing icons eg system tray icon

I'd like to change some icons in the pap menu to some custom modified ones I downloaded from PortableApps Crystal on PTC the main two I can find are...

TFRMENU
frmMenu
Icon.Data
&
TFRMENU
trayiconMenu
Icon.Data

I'd like to know what the correct type, size and bit for these icons are please? eg: 16x16 at 8bit or 48x48 at 32bit etc... thanks for your time.

**It's ok I just worked it out frmMenu Icon.Data image= 16x16 & 32x32 @ 8Bits then 16x16, 32x32 & 48x48 @ 32bits...

trayiconMenu Icon.Data image= 16x16 @ 4bits, 16x16 @ 8bits & 16x16 @ 32bits**

both are single icons with those different images in them
