I was using Internet Exploder on my school's PC to go over and download some portableapps, when something odd occurred. I went to install google chrome, and it asked if I want to open or save the program as normal. (the only good feature of IE imo) I hit open, and it said that it won't run because it isn't named online.paf. However, the problem is if you open a file in Internet Exploder instead of hitting save, it give it a random name before opening it, therefore breaking the installer.
Another reason to hate IE I suppose.
Confirmed on windows xp

I don't know if it's an intentional typo
Internet Exploder
But it might be because of the browser saving the temp file with a different name. It's not really something that can be fixed, except than saving the file locally and delete it afterward.
That was compltely on purpose. Even bug reports can have a cheery twist every now and again, can't they?

Does IE same them as a random file name and run them from TEMP? If so, I could have the installer check to see if it's running from TEMP and not show that error.

I think it does, I will check and confirm.
EDIT: it does save it to TEMP but I don't think it renames it, as there is a GoogleChromePortable_4.0.249.89_online.paf.exe in TEMP, or at least what i think is the Temp folder.

Anything that you click open as instead of save is downloaded and then executed from TEMP whether it's a .ahk, .zip, .exe, .etc, .etc.

why does it have to be named _online_ anyway? I mean, when downloaded from sf, yes. But it shouldn't be a requirement . . . .

Agreed, that is what I was thinking to. I also think there should be more on the site showing what apps need the internet.

There's the big line: "Online Installer: This is an online installer that will download additional files during setup." right on the homepage for the app. And there's the fact that the file ends in _online.paf.exe which you can see when you mouseover the Download button and in the file name once you've downloaded it and before you run it. That's really clear at every moment.
We're not gonna post some huge flashing warning. It's just an online installer. It's not going to mug you.

I see it now, I over looked it :/
ALSO: The last line made me laugh lol

It's to show a user running it that it is an online installer before they even run it. That way you can always tells. Some people are touchy about online installers.

Has this been fixed yet?
Simplifying daily life through technology
This may not be fixed. It seems it is an IE issue with it randomly renaming the file (for no good reason). As a general rule, downloading an EXE and selecting it to open within IE is an *exceedingly* bad idea anyway, so we simply may not worry about this. If it is fixed, it'll be a check in the installer to see if it is running from TEMP (where IE sticks it) and not to the _online.paf.exe check. But it would only then be rolled out as each app is updated. We won't do any revisions for something like this.
Bottom line, just save it locally. Or open and run it in Firefox or Firefox Portable if you really want to do it that way.
