Unable to install onto my sony walkman NWZ-S616F or such.

I am unable to install portableapps onto my sony walkman device, when i have saved t he file onto my computer i install and looks trough the directory folder but i am unable to find my walkman on the list.
I HAVE plugged the walkman into my computer so it should be detected on the list.

What should i do to make it work?

Computer or disk

That's an issue with the computer or disk. I'm not sure how you go about doing that sort of thing, try searching the web. I can't really help you.

Well problems?

Well i am going to get an usb drive so I can install some things. A os such as backtrack 4. portable apps so i can run programs without needing to have the program on the computer. Will there be a problem, because what ive heard and read you need to make the usb thingy into Fat32. So am i still going to be able to install an os plus portable apps?

I am a real computer rookie but I want to learn everything I can Smile How antivirus works, how to make a simple internet page using c++ or java and many many more things.

i wouldn't install backtrack4

i wouldn't install backtrack4 on the walkman. I'm pretty sure somewhere its got the OS for the walkman hidden on that disk. Toast the mbr, and toast the device.

That's why you can't format it with windows formation tool.

As far as mounting, its not assigned a drive letter, so the installers won't find it. My 16 gig is slow to copy, so I wouldn't want to launch apps from it.

MTP device?

As far as I can see, the NWZ-S718F is a MTP (media transfer protocol) device, i.e. you have to sync it from something like Windows Media Player or iTunes or some such application, rather than it appearing as a drive letter and you can just copy the mp3 files onto it.

It may have a mass storage mode selectable from its menus, but you'll have to check the device itself for that.

Anyways, PortableApps are only installable and usable with a mass storage device, not an MTP one. It is fundamental to the way MTP works that you cannot just access the files on it from a computer.

iPod has to be in Hard Drive mode

You can only install onto an iPod if it is in hard drive mode, which no longer exists on newer iPods, so you can't use PortableApps on them either now.

I have two MP3 players - a Creative Zen 16GB, and a Creative Zen MX 16GB - they look identical from the outside, but one is MTP, the other is MSD, so only one of them can be used for portable apps.

AFAIK, the hard drive mode

AFAIK, the hard drive mode still exists, but you have to enable it. Either via iTunes or like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363 .

Probably still the same issue

From my experience of Sony equipment, they are very much like iPods in that you can pretty much forget about doing anything useful with unofficial software. It doesn't help that Sony software usually sucks. They make great products IMO, but their software is typically terrible.

Oh well. Sad

Mp3 players

Well i dont think Ipod is able to produce as good sound as the sony walkman or any other walkman, perhaps less quality sound.

Why is ipod and iphone and such prodects such a fame?

Money

Because there are huge sums of money behind marketing Apple products. Apple knows how to make cool things that appeal to the biggest audience possible. Sony also seems to be notoriously bad at marketing their products (think Betamax, MiniDisc etc).

It's often the case that the "best" doesn't always win. Even the MP3 format itself is not the "best" lossy audio compression format, but nowadays it's the most popular so it's the winner!

Media Transfer Protocol is

Media Transfer Protocol is just something windows came out with to make our lives more miserable it came out in one of the newer versions of windows media player. I did not have any problem with mtp with windows media player 9. Im going to see what I can do to stop MTP.

If you uninstall Windows

If you uninstall Windows media player 11 and Windows media format 11 runtime, it should be seen as a removable drive. (It worked on a new install of windows xp)
