help.html for freeware apps

Looking at the help.html file for the current set of portable freeware, some, maybe all, contain the following line:

This software is OSI Certified Open Source Software. OSI Certified is a certification mark of the Open Source Initiative.

The problem with that is that only the launcher is OS, the app itself is freeware, and while help.html does contain information relating to the launcher as well, it is generally more about the packaged app, thus making this misleading.

It might be worth changing this line for freeware apps to something more like:

This application is Freeware and is packaged in PortableApps.com format with permission from the author.
The PortableApps.com launcher is OSI Certified Open Source Software. OSI Certified is a certification mark of the Open Source Initiative.

On a similar note, what about OS apps that are not OSI Certified?

Interesting

I wonder if it should even be mentioned. I never found how to apply for it.

Doesn't the help

file refer to the Portable apps launcher ?

Not when they all say "<--App

Not when they all say " Portable Help"

Well, when we say "portable" at the end

it usually means we're referring to the portable version of the app, which usually means the launcher itself. I do agree though, that many users (especially new ones) might be misled, though. I've never thought about this. Many (probably mostly all) of the users don't bother reading the help.html file anyway.

I was actually thinking more

I was actually thinking more about the OSI not wanting freeware and non-certified apps being tagged as OSI Certified.

As you say, most users probably don't read the help.html file, and honestly, most probably don't care one way or the other whether it is freeware or OS.

I just picked it up myself because I have been packaging 20-ish apps the last few days for dev test release soon, which are all freeware.
